Car with the most legroom in the back?

We need to change our car later this year. We currently have a Vectra which is quite roomy, but Dh is 6'2" and drives with the seat right back which doesn't leave much space for the passenger behind him.

But most cars we've come across recently have less room in the back than ours.

DS1 is 9 and almost as tall as me already. Within the lifetime of the new car he will be taller than dh, and ds2 will probably be similar height.

Do estate cars have more legroom?

Roisin, not much help as we have exactly the same problem.(Astra estate) We can't put Amelia behind DH as she just kicks at the back of the seat so poor old DS(7) is squashed.

WE are hoping to look at replacing my little Clio for a larger family car later in the year, but need to wait for financial reasons.

We have looked at a few cars in the past and it seemed that DH didn't need his seat quite so far back, and more upright,in the "MPV" type cars, like a Zafira.

Will watch with interest, good luck.

Chrysler PT crusiers are huge in the back...and very quirky

We needed an estate car with plenty of legroom front and back, and we found that the Ford Mondeo was best for this. Ours is an 02 model.

My mum has a Zafira, which is OK legroom-wise if there's just 5 seats and the middle row can go right back. But it's no good if you want to use the back row.

I like having the extra height and space of a mini-MPV, though we rarely need 7 people, but we find the Zafira seats very uncomfortable. Maybe that's just my mum's budget model?

We wouldn't want a huge, gas-guzzling proper MPV though.

Cryslar grand voyager are enourmmous and the seats are adult size and super comfy as well

Audi A6 has lots of legroom. Not sure about the A4 - it has a smaller boot, but the passenger leg room might be the same as the A6.

roisin · 19/04/2007 18:14

Oh that's useful. My bro has got an A6 I think, so we could have a try in that.

My friend has a Zafira motability car which she can't wait to trade in for something else. The reason is that she needs the space in the back for the wheelchair which means that the 'middle' seats have very little legroom if she has passengers. Actually I'm now wondering if that's partly because she has the driving seat quite a way back. She drives with hand controls and needs plenty of room to swing her legs in as her knee doesn't bend very well. Still, I suppose the same would apply if the driver was tall so it's still poor design.

If you can afford it, the Mercedes R Class has loads of legroom (and six seats 2x2x2). i haven't seen anything with the same amount. The problem as well as the cost is that the car is almost 17 feet long!

WendyWeber · 23/04/2007 09:43

Hi, roisin

I mentioned this on another car thread recently - we once used a taxi to get to the airport and it was a VW Passat saloon. The boot was huge and the rear seat legroom was massive too (this was in 2003 and it wasn't a new car but I would imagine newer ones would be the same)

DH used to have a Peugeot 406 estate, that had an enormous boot but the passenger space wasn't as good.
