DD2 (5) has very sensitive skin. Has mild eczema but sometimes can get quite angry in places if something doesn't agree.
Last week I put ordinary suncream on her. All of her body was fine but her face was terrible. (Asda kids I think) Her cheeks dried up and looked quite raised, red and sore.
Need to buy a decent one, don't mind paying out if it's going to save her from discomfort and unsightly skin.
Thanks.

My daughter's skin seemed to react to everything last year, when she was 12 months old. I put Aveeno bodycream on her and it settled really quickly. I couldnt get any suncream over here though, I managed to get some in the USA, and it was quite cheap (about £6 inc P&P). She has had no reactions since.

bergaderm (used to be proderm} for sensitive skin is fantastic for people with excema.I get it in waitrose.
It comes as a mousse in a blue can with orange lid.

Simple baby suncream is good, costs £10 my dd has sensative skin also & is only thing I can use on her.

Boots seem to be the only ones who stock it.

bran · 16/04/2007 22:24

I used Bergaderm last year on ds and myself (ds has mild eczema) and it worked very well, but it's agony if you get it into your eyes. This year I'm going to try Dr Hauschka, but if that causes a reaction I will go back to Bergaderm and just be very careful about not letting ds rub his eyes and drying off sweat before it drips down towards the eyes.

Everything but Simple (the one for children - says it's for sun allergies) brings ds2 out in a dreadful rash. There's an E45 barrier cream too (with all the suncreams in Boots - not ordinary E45 cream) which works by coating the skin and reflecting the sun away (rather than UVA/UVB protection) - I'm going to give that a go this summer as well - though it does make them look like they've been slathered in lard ready to swim the Channel.

Ds v v allergic to most things. His dermatologist recommends Sunsense low irritant cream (the purple tube if you google Sunsense). We have been using a sample provided by the hospital for the last 2 days and it hasnt caused any itching at all so I have jsut ordered some online. Roc sante soleil is also good for ds. Every other sunscreen causes redness/itching/stinging.

this may seem a trite reply by some people

personally, i wouldnt apply suncream. i am still somewahat shocked by people spreading this nasty stuff allover their kids skin. it is really really nasty stuff. however it is also a necessity which i understand.

my advice, put your son in long sleeved, loose, 100% cotton clothes. full trousers, not shorts. keep a hat on him at all times. and keep him out of the sun as much as possible.
only take him out when absolutly vital. and preferably never in the afternoons. i realise that this is almost imppossible in england, but if his skin is as sensitive as you say, then its best not to aggravate it with further nasty chemicals.

stitch · 16/04/2007 23:02

oops, didnt read dd.
put her in cotton clothes for school, including cotton trousers. not the plasticky teflon coated stuff, or the polyester dresses they wear in the summer. get her a wide brimmed straw hat. cotton gloves for her hands.
actually, its going to be a nightmare getting her to do all this if she's anything like my kids. but i agrew up in a hot desert, and never ever used suncream till i came to england. that was how we protected ourselves, and it worked.

We use Lavera chemical free for my eczema sufferer. Brilliant!!!! You can get it from Green Baby. I also agree with the covering up thing. Have bought rash vests, long bathers and big hats for the beach this year so it'll only be ankles and noses really.

florenceuk · 17/04/2007 22:16

Sunsense are good - you can get the toddler milk on Amazon now: here but they also do a low irritant one. I find it has a great texture and the kids like the roll-on version.

TooTicky · 17/04/2007 22:21

I avoid sun cream as much as possible. The chemicals in most creams are scary. The one from Green People is a lot more natural.
Incidentally, many people are actually becoming vitamin D deficient because of such high use of sun creams.

MilaMae · 17/04/2007 22:25

We used Sunsense toddler milk too last year- very good, no irritations at all. Many thanks Florence-no idea you could get it on Amazon, was trying to track it down. By the way if he has bad eczema you can get suncreen on perscription like we did last year. Unfortunately we were perscribed E45 which caused irritation as did Simple.

MilaMae · 17/04/2007 22:32

I read a thing in the Independant at the weekend about Vit D deficiency. Was thinking about letting the kids have the odd 10 mins here and there unprotected for that reason (obviously supervised to prevent burning). Is any sun exposure dangerous or is it just if it gets to the burning stage, this article glossed over the dangers of too much sun exposure????

MrsApron · 17/04/2007 22:33

The Neals yard one is fab. No issues here for anyone and we have a whole catalogue of skin complaints.

Dinosaur · 17/04/2007 22:33

Dr Hauschka, but it is pricey.

TooTicky · 17/04/2007 22:34

Try to avoid sun between 11 and 3 (not always practical!). After all, only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun....
Try to get a feel for how fierce the sun is at different times.
