What's to stop some marketing person coming on here, posting a few times and getting their name known, then starting a thread advertising their product?

NorksBride · 16/04/2007 00:59

Yes

See?!

Londonmamma · 16/04/2007 08:09

Thanks Norks. That's quite a shocking sight at 8.09a.m. Going away for a week now to recover x

I have read about the youth market in particular being susceptible to this kind of advertising. In the US, companies that sell products such as beer, sports wear, and make up, employ teenagers and students at college to basically sell their product to their friends by endorsing it. The companies trawl round the malls looking for the "cool kids" whom others look up to, and pay them (or give them free products) to engage in this stealth advertising. I don't know if it happens in the UK but frankly I would be surprised if it didn't.

amidaiwish · 16/04/2007 08:47

isn't that what every designer does
gives A-Z list celebrities free bags, clothes, products etc... with the knowledge that they will be photographed with the bag and all us suckers will go off and buy one?

and do you really think all those beauty awards are for real? funny that most of the products are owned by Procter & Gamble, who just happen to be MASSIVE ADVERTISERS. i mean, head & shoulders, is it really shampoo of the year??

i guess other MN would spot that a certain poster keeps raving on about and recommending produdtY

that said i msut sound like a bugaboo employee as i am more than happy to recommend them and their products as good

Astrophe · 16/04/2007 16:10

pruni, they are plastic shoes, like clogs in design, but with holes in so you can wear them in water if you so desire. Useful if you are into beach fishing I imagine, but otherwise...?

amidaiwish · 16/04/2007 16:46

well i am a sales advisor for mamatoto and often post links to products there. but only to products that i do actually have and think are the best...
i can tell you though it doesn't make any difference to sales.
i am sure marketing depts have far more effective ways of selling their products.

zippitippitoes · 16/04/2007 16:50

do you mean someone starts a thread saying

a pamper party for tweens is really great..i had one and got some stuff here

Gingerbear · 16/04/2007 16:51

Pruni, If you were thinking of the thread that I posted on: I can assure you that I don't work for ultralase. I was just very, very happy with the procedure and aftercare service I received 2 years ago, and that is why I recommend them to people who ask about laser eye surgery.
My sister had similar surgery done 3 years before me and had the most dreadful time (I won't name the company she used, but it was not ultralase)

zippitippitoes · 16/04/2007 16:51

I thought that about the laser one...it must have been a bit transparent

Gingerbear · 16/04/2007 21:00

Ah, OK, I see your train of thought now.

Don't we all wax lyrical about our favourite products though from time to time?

Janh · 16/04/2007 21:01

I am always raving about Miele and Bosch - I wish they would pay me

Gingerbear · 16/04/2007 21:03

lol Janh, I bought my miele Cat n Dog 'cos of you!

PeachesMcLean · 16/04/2007 21:10

It's called viral marketing and it's quite common I think.

JustineMumsnet · 17/04/2007 10:33

Don't think big companies would do this tbh - they would be too worried about being exposed and the pr fall out.

Enid · 17/04/2007 10:34

I am the Ikea antilop agent
