I'm not sure what I need tbh. But as long as its reliable and not too expensive. Any ideas of makes and where to get them from?

hi,

i would go for Dell. They are reliable and you can get some great deals. I got mine from the Dell outlet website. Basically they have pcs/laptops that have been returned as there was a problem and they have fixed them and resell them at a cheaper price.
I bought mine a couple of years ago now and have not had one problem with it. So for me it was certainly worth taking the risk. You don't get told what the problem was but you still get a years guarantee on tmem.
Worth a look as stock changed on a daily basis.

Yes Dell usually do have really good offers on - BUT personally I will never buy anything from Dell again. My laptop died on me recently and their customer service centre is useless and annoyingly, in India!! Take it from me, Dell are only ok if you can handle a fault yourself. If you want someone with an after-sales facility, I'd try somewhere like PC World who have an in-house PC doctor in case you need it. HTH

dell here too.
altho advertised price is no where near final price.
our was advertised @ £600 but by the time we put on all the necessary extras like a CD drive it was about £1100

oh dear littlemissbossy, sorry to hear about your laptop. I only ever had to deal with anyone from Dell when I was arranging delivery and that was when they were still in good old Ireland.

However I have just remembered that my dh bought his pc from them as well and they delivered a faulty flat screen. He was not happy but to be fair to dell they arranged for a new one to be delivered within a couple of days.

I am sorry if anyone here works for pc world but I have found them to be absoltely useless when it comes to answering questions about hardware. We have had some bad experiences with them in the past and will not go anywhere near them.

Have just bought an Elonex after owning 4 Dells, I agree that the after care service from Dell has gone downhill since moving it to India.

I have been extremely pleased with Elonex and when I have spoken to their techinical support you get straight through to a person without having to go through a series of press 1 for x, press 2 for y etc. Should also say that I got a very high spec. machine for a really good price, the only thing that lets it down in my opinion is the battery life isn't as good as the Dell.

I would strongly recommend Acer - just the same features as a Dell but much cheaper. Their customer service seems to be really good and my BIL's father has used them for years and has had no major problems at all.

Tigerlillies are you my dh?

Demented · 20/07/2004 14:15

We've got two Dells (ordinary PC and laptop), haven't had to test their customer service so can't comment but have no complaint with the machines themselves.

I've heard a lot of recommendations for Dell so I will check them out.
I'm wary of buing online especially with such a lot of money switching hands but I will look anyway.
Does anyone know what DDR RAM is? As apposed to RAM.
LOL Fio2 no I'm not your dh!
