Has anyone any ideas about where to get some of these? I just got a nice new cot for expected Ds2, and our w'proof sheets seem to be a little bit too small for the mattress. Just as I thought I had it all under control
Would love replies in next 8 weeks if possible!!

i think it maybe because tou should not be using waterproof sheets for children under 1...

cause of cot death risk

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 14/04/2007 10:25

Why dont you get those elastic straps which make them snug like a fitted sheet

nearlythere · 14/04/2007 10:38

most nursery shops will sell the breathable fitted mattress covers (zip over type) probably what is already on it but a spare one can come in handy!!

jujuthejetmum · 14/04/2007 10:42

use Pampers nighttime sheets in cot under a fitted cot sheet?

flightattendant · 14/04/2007 16:24

Oh dear I didn't realise about the risk of cot death. Is that true? I suppose I thought that if the mattress has a PVC cover as standard, then a fitted sheet on top of it (one side PVC, one side towelling) wouldn't be any more of a risk.
What does anyone else think?
Thaks for all the suggestions!
I really liked our fitted ones rather than ones you tie on, as they cover the whole mattress and you don't need to worry about leaks so much. You can just whip them off and replace if there's any mess.
Saying that my DS rarely slept in his cot anyway! I'm not sure how much new DS will use his, but hey it's great fun spending money just in case

Just remembered where we got the originals...it was a La Redoute/ Vertbaudet sale I think. They still have them, but full price now. Darn!

pampers night time bed mats etc also say not suitable for children under 1

Janh · 15/04/2007 10:45

If the mattress has a PVC cover you don't need a waterproof sheet as well, do you?

Gingerbear · 15/04/2007 10:46

hippychick breathable fitted mattress protector

We have this one. You can also get a non-fitted one that is cheaper.

flightattendant · 15/04/2007 14:50

Thanks Gingerbear - looks smashing! I've gone for it and got the La redoute ones yesterday.
Janh, I meant that some mattresses have the PVC covers. Unfortunately my new one doesn't. So I do really need something if it's going to last more than a few weeks!
Btw the La Redoute ones are also breathable, so hopefully will be safe.

NannyL, just out of curiosity, what do you use in preference?

OP posts:
NannyL · 15/04/2007 15:11

we use nothing.... just a cot sheet

but the cot matress has a zip on and off cover made of this material that they make (non waterproof) matress protectors out of. (this is part of the matress, not an extra thing that we put on)

When the matress sheet gets wet somehow the wetness deosnt seem to absorb into this material stuff (or if its slightly damp we dont put a new sheet on and a couple of hours later it is dry).... dont know why it just doesnt.... but if it did we would zip it off and put it in the washing machine

I have never had a waterproof sheet under a baby and i wouldnt not do it either cause if the baby gets on their front they can suffocate.

NannyL · 15/04/2007 15:12

should day would not, not wouldnt not!

flightattendant · 15/04/2007 16:00

Thanks for explaining your methods, NannyL - something to think about at least. Will have to go and look up some research on suffocation risks etc. as I wouldn't want to put Ds in danger.
Perhaps I'm lazy but I have trouble with the idea of stripping the entire mattress every time it needs a wash, especially in the middle of the night...where to put Ds while it is washed and dried?

Just found this, it's from the Department of Health website so I hope it's correct:

You also need:? a firm mattress,which must fit the cot snugly, without leaving spaces round the edges ? the baby could trap his or her head and suffocate. It?s best if the mattress has a built-in plastic cover but, if not, you can put a waterproof sheet firmly around the mattress,under the bottom sheet (never use thin plastic or a bin liner as your baby could suffocate in the loose folds);

The hippychick sheets are breathable PU though - not PVC - like thicker version of cloth nappy wraps.

Safe IMO.
