I'm looking for ways to encourage my dcs to enjoy books...(ds loves them and would be read to all day long, whereas dd is not so keen and needs encouraging)...

We have gazillions of children's books at home, mostly in toyboxes, so I'm looking for a nice-looking bookcase that displays books facing out so that the dcs can see the covers and choose books. Hopefully not too expensive too. We have seen this one (not in RL) but we have waaaaaaay more books than it can hold! Has anyone seen anything that might fit the bill? TIA.

The one you linked to is the only one I've seen around - I store the big picture books vertically in large crates so that (in theory) they can flick through them. I also have an old double-sided shelving unit on castors - I think it was probably originally used in a school or library - maybe you could find something that is designed to be used in libraries?

Thanks KTP!

I will have a look on library furniture sites. You can get some really lovely bright stuff for primary schools I know...the only prob is that they tend to be a) v. sturdy and therefore b) v. expensive!

these are lovely
different colour
a bit smaller

ooh thanks Nbg!

I really like them all, and the one on wheels looks v. practical. Like it like it like it!

I love them and have been eyeing them up for ages now.

Have you thought of getting a couple of the tidybooks one? You can fit loads of books in them (we have one) and it really does seem to encourage choosing/reading books. Also as you can see the covers it brightens up any room.

Yes, that's an idea Pannacotta.

BTW I love your name! If I were having another baby girl...! [bonkers madwoman alert!]

we have a 'robin' bookcase from Ikea that's in the hallway near their bedroom- there are books all over the house that I rotate as well, as they can't reach up to the higher shelves. It's attached to the wall so it won't fall on top of them. I don't like the look of the tidy book thing, looks a bit clinical for me

Glad you approve (of the name that is)!
Btw, GLTC do a similar bookcase to the tidybooks but more of a canvas sling type affair, which might work for you as an extra option, where you can also see the book covers...

i keep looking at those but came to the conculsion that a few orange boxes would do the trick just as well

KTeePee · 11/04/2007 08:53

Rosey, I was in Ikea yesterday and saw some shelves I thought would be a cheap option

here

You could put up lots of these on a wall - but obviously not easy to move them around once you've done it!

thanks for that KTP!

Dh came home from his golf lesson yesterady and said he wants to spend £200 on a driver....so the bookcase might need to wait another month...!
