Kitchen conundrum - advice please!

Hi I wonder if I could pick your collective brains about our new kitchen. I can't decide whether to keep our existing fridge freezer which is a big ugly white thing, and which couldn't be boxed in for various tedious reasons, or to go for a separate fridge and freezer units under the worktop. The benefit would be more worktop space and a much smarter kitchen, but you'd have to bend down every time you wanted to get something out, and the fridge would be a little smaller.

It's not a kitchen for us forever - we're probaby going to sell up in a year or so to get a bigger place, and I guess we'd sell to people like we were pre-baby (not massive cooks, though sometimes have people round for a meal). As the kitchen is the dining room, I reckon people who might buy it would prefer a smart looking room, instead of a less asthetic but more convenient one. What are your thoughts wise mumsnetters?

I think that it's hard to look stylish if the fridge doesn't fit in with the rest of the kitchen. If style is a consideration for the market that you'll be aiming at then the only acceptable visible fridge is a snazzy American style one, but they're very over-priced.

Can you replace it with a fridge freezer which is tall and can also be fitted with doors to match your cabinets? Otherwise my preference would be for the under-the-counter type.

Keep existing fridge/freezer and get a good quality set of magnetic pictures to put on the front of it to spice it up.

That's a great idea Sofia - do you have any recommendations on where to purchase said pictures (sorry to barge in MrsCurly!). mit x

A Smeg fridge in a cool colour will make your purchasers think you are funky couple with a hip social life...and you can take it with you.

In the usa museum shops usually sell them. I think I saw them at the Tate Modern. OR you could be really advanced and make your own. I did a project once that needed lots of magnets, so I made them myself. I found rolls of magnetic tape (not sticky but flexible). I think I got it at a sheet metal place...but try looking online. It's about the thickness of a credit card but more flexible. And then print out photos and spray mount them to the magnets. You can even cut out shapes as the magnet is thin enough to cut with scissors.

Thanks ladies. I think I am going for the units under worktop. Style over substance.

Any other kitchen advice appreciated! Did anyone make any mistakes I could learn from?

I've seen the sticky-back stuff you use to cover wheelie bins, used to cover kitchen units-not a bad look I guess, cheap & cheerful!
