Vacuum cleaners and dog hair!

stellarmum · 16/07/2004 14:43

Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner that will actually pick up dog hair? I have a black dog, a cream carpet, an accident prone teenager and a very dribbly 5 month old. My carpet is disgusting! We have a Dyson and it's just not up to it... please help!!

Miele Cat and Dog. It's brilliant!

misdee · 16/07/2004 14:56

what style of dyson do u have? my friend borrowed my dyson when she was looking after her parents german shephard and left piles of hair everywhere, and she didnt want to give my dyson back.

i used to have a cat, b4 dd1 was born, and he slept in one spot on the lviing room floor, the carpet was green and we couldnt shift this pile of cat fur, which was black and white untill we got the dyson and it cleared it all on the 1st go.

stellarmum · 16/07/2004 14:56

Ooh I've never heard of that, sounds promising! Quick, where can I get one? Are they very expensive?

I'm not sure what type I have, it's not one of the newer expensive ones! It just doesn't seem to pick the hair up, the carpet is quite long pile, do you think that would make a difference?

stellarmum, look here .

The cat and dog is £150 - the ordinary one (S571) is £109. Which? reckon it picks up animal hair just as well as the Cat and Dog does. You can get the Cat and Dog filter (Active Air) as well as the standard one if you want, it's about £12 I think.

I bought an S571 from Hughes a month or so ago and it is brilliant. (I bought extra bags at the same time as it was no extra p & p.)

We have an animal dyson that we bought around a year ago. It's brilliant at picking up dog hair. It seemed a lot of money at the time, but it was recommended to us and in my opinion is well worth the money.

Before using the Animal Dyson for the first time I did an experiment (sad aren't I). I vacuumed the living room using my old ordinary Dyson and then vacuumed using the Animal Dyson. The Animal Dyson managed to pick up a whole container full of hair even though I had only just vacuumed!!!!

A friend of mine had recommended the Animal Dyson to me. Although she suffers with Asthma she is now able to have pets without them causing any attacks.

Sorry if I'm sounding like an advert, but they really are brilliant.

We,ve got a bog standard upright dyson, which gets up spaniel hair with no trouble. Are you sure your belts not broken stellarmum? Put the dyson on, then tip the whole unit back to make sure the brush is going round. Keep little fingers out of the way tho'

stellarmum · 16/07/2004 16:02

Easy, I don't think the brush is going round what do i do if the belt is broken? Can it be fixed without too much hassle?

I just had a look at that link janh, that's a very good price and recommended by which... do you know what the actual difference is between the cat and dog one and the other one?

OP posts:
Easy · 16/07/2004 16:08

You can change it yourself, just go to an electrical shop and buy a new belt. The first time it broke I rang up dyson for advice and they sent me 2 in the post FREE.

Do you have an instruction manual still? that should show you how to change it.

Otherwise, where do you live. dh is an old hand at changing them (hates doing it tho' ). He's here in nottingham at weekends, Uxbridge during the week !!!

Easy · 16/07/2004 16:11

BTW a new belt costs about £2, better than spending £180 on a new machine eh?

stellarmum · 16/07/2004 16:48

OK I've just got home and checked and the brushisn't going round! So need to find Dyson number.... lost the instruction manual ages ago I'm afraid. And live nowhere near you and your handy dh easy

OP posts:
Easy · 16/07/2004 16:58

Ah, if you live nowhere near then my dh isn't handy.

He's a computer software man, can't do anything practical, only changes the belt cos he did it the first time (took him 35 minutes then), so knows how now.

Easy · 16/07/2004 16:59

Dyson have a website. Can't do the link, got to go and collect ds. see you later.

stellarmum, there are 3 diffs I think - the Cat & Dog has the special filter, a "turbo" head, and is 1800w rather than 1700w, but as I said Which thought the cheap one was just as good with animal hair and I have been amazed at the suction on mine, it lifts the carpet!

If you can get a new belt for your Dyson you might not want to bother, but FWIW I have a Dyson too, and while it is brilliant for carpet on flat floors the Miele is much better for hard floors and stairs, plus it is much lighter and easier to lug about. So you might want to think about getting a Miele too and can use that while you sort out your Dyson. The bags are made of kind of fabric, don't block the suction until they're really full and don't seem to let any dust escape.

(My Dyson's rotating brush was badly tangled with hairs etc a while ago, I don't know if that stopped it going round but it certainly picked up better after I'd spent 10 minutes at it with pliers and scissors.)

stellarmum · 17/07/2004 19:29

I phoned Dyson, and a very helpful lady stayed on the phone for about two hours to talk me through getting to the belt, getting it off, and then explained how to get a new one on, bless her!
The Dyson is sat in the middle of the kitchen half dismantled, and I, clever thing that I am, forgot to buy the bloody belts today!
And it is all tangled with hair janh, I'm sure that isn't helping, so will get the scissors out this evening!

sleeplessmum2be · 18/07/2004 10:27

ditto miele cat and dog !!!!
Also couldnt live without it!!!

Easy · 18/07/2004 13:47

Hey stellarmum, you're learning a new skill!!!

Good luck

Easy · 18/07/2004 13:50

Oh, buy 2 new belts, then you've got one in if it goes again.

Ours only breaks if I forget to roll up our fringed rug, and the fringe gets caught in it. If we'd bought the more expensive model which has brush control it wouldn't happen, but didn't know that till after we'd bought.

stellarmum · 18/07/2004 19:22

I did it! bought the new belts, and put one on (well, dp put it on, hurt my poor little fingers too much!) And now I am sat here admiring a CLEAN carpet! And how embarrassing when I hoovered to find how much crap was in the carpet!
Funnily enough easy, managed to suck up a shoelace and snap the first belt within 10 minutes of starting, luckily had bought two!
Many many thanks to you all!!
