High back booster with 5 point harness?

My 3.5 year old dd is now at the top of her rearward facing britax so we're looking at high back boosters. They all seem to just fasten the child in with the cars seat belt though and we'd really like her to use a harness for as long as possible. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist?

How heavy is she? You can get convertible (group 1/2 I think) seats that have harness up to 18kg then adult seatbelt or there are some more specialist seats like the britax two way elite that have harnesses tested to 25kg.

The thing about 5 point harnesses is though that they are not as safe after a certain weight because they don't hold them in. The point of a high back booster is side protection but also to hold the seatbelt in the correct place so it's used effectively. I'd just use the seatbelt.

Recaro young sport, also I think cybex do one with the impact shield which gets removed once they are 18kg.

If a 5 point harness isn't safe then why do race car drivers use them? She's just over 2 stone so an 18kg one could still work.

DS1 has a Britain that has a five point harness but can also be used just as a high back booster. He's 3 but very tall and quite heavy (16kg) for his age.

The five point harness can be used up to 18kg and then the car seat belt is used. I think it's called a Britax romer, I'll check.

Ah thank you it all seems to make much more sense now. Keeping your kids safe seems like a minefield sometimes!

If you have a look somewhere like Kiddicare they have a section for "high back seats with harness".

It's not that they're not safe, but if you use an 18kg one and she's 19kg (I know you say she's not yet) then it's not going to hold her. You can't have a blanket "it's a 5 point harness so it's safer" rule.

There is a new joie which has a ff harness up to 25kg

Misty9 · 13/09/2017 12:40

We've got a recaro young sport and would rate It, although it was a pain to remove the harness! I have read though that they're safer in a seatbelt hbb than harness and this the safest forward facing restraint. Dd is 3.5 and 15kg and I can't wait until she's in a hbb when she turns four as the rf seat is a bit of a pain now.

SleepFreeZone · 13/09/2017 12:42

We've got a 2way Elite that's meant hold them till 25kg although the new one apparently only says 18kg, so I'm not sure what's changed.

We've got joie stages and just turned 3yo ds around to ff (very reluctantly due to having to move carseats around alot and the seatbelt in my new car being way to short for rf so had to keep getting it installed by halfords) and that still uses the 5 point harness stlill
