Please can you recommend a second hand car with good fuel efficiency around the £5K mark?

I have been promoted and will be working at a new office further away from the current one. I imagine I'll need to drive around 200 miles a week to get to work and back. Currently have a large 2L petrol guzzler so it's going to be very expensive to do this kind of mileage. Also the car tax is £330 a year on the current car.

It would be great to have some recommendations of second hand cars, around the £5K mark, preferably automatic, to save money at the pumps!!

Thanks in advance.

Depends what size car you need really. I'd be sticking with petrol at the £5k price point though. What sort of mpg do you get from your current car?

haba · 07/09/2017 18:06

Honda jazz, Skoda Fabia, or nissan Micra have good efficiency.

Ex-motability are great value. Do you need 5 doors? Space for car seats? Skoda Fabia is good bet.

Thanks v much for the suggestions! I will have a look at those.

We're a family of four but I'm going to need something nippy for motorway driving... so not too worried about it being particularly big and don't want anything to heavy.

sharklovers about 30 mpg I think? It is atrocious.

30mpg is pretty reasonable, I think you could probably get a decent sized petrol that will give 40mpg.

PickAChew · 07/09/2017 20:36

Our 61 reg 1.8l avensis isn't sluggish and does 40mpg. That's probably worth about 5k at most now.

Fiat 500? My daughter gets around 55mpg in hers

smu06set · 07/09/2017 20:39

Diesel Skoda Fabia definitely! Amazing fuel economy and nippy too.

we have a fiesta. i put £20 on a week roughly and do about 20-22 miles a day then general running around town miles. pay £10 a month tax for £120 a year. Lovely car.

The OP isn't doing enough miles for the fuel savings to offset the potentially higher repair costs of a diesel.

I'd be sticking with your current car. It's not a big mileage and any better fuel economy will be massively off set by the cost.

This is a very good point! How much money are you looking at spending to change? Unless your car is at death's door or will be soon it may make financial sense to stick with what you have. Loads of people spend ££££s because their new car is "only £30 road tax", they don't grasp the concept that depreciation is the most expensive aspect of car ownership!

I downsized a couple of years ago for same reason. Expected to hate it, but I totally love my little Fiesta. Ecoboost means it is nippy but still v economical and no road tax. For £5k you should be able to get 3 years old with reasonable mileage.
