It seemed like such a good idea at the time -

but when I tried to change the sheets on ds's new bed I realised that maybe it wasn't after all!

We got him a very high 'mid-sleeper', the mattress is about boob-height for me and the safety bars around the bed come up nearly to my chin. He LOVES it of course! But to change the sheet I had to climb right up onto to bed - and that ladder is a tight squeeze for my generous child-bearing hips - and then pull the sheet tight through the bars under the bed, breaking two nails in the process. Not that they were very long in the first place .

What fun.

sounds like fitted sheets might be an idea?

boudicca · 18/07/2004 12:38

I used to spend hours pulling the bottom sheet tight underneath my Dds bunks-it got to be quite an obsession--I really should have 'got a life'

boudicca · 18/07/2004 12:40

didn't mean to imply anything about you

SoupDragon · 18/07/2004 12:51

Hehehehe. Fitted sheets are easier but they don't completely solve the problem. It's very tricky to get the middle of the wall edge tucked under (IYSWIM!). So I don't bother! Both DSs have mid height loft beds.

boudicca · 18/07/2004 12:58

I have a sneaky suspicion that all the worrying about tucking in is completely lost on our Dds' & Dss'!!

SoupDragon · 18/07/2004 13:15

Especially when they have friends round and strip the bed in under 2 minutes...

Kayleigh · 18/07/2004 13:27

I have the same problem. I use a fitted bottom sheet on ds1s bed. I put it on where I can get to and get him to tuck the long edge by the wall in when he gets into bed.

I also have child bearing hips prettycandles
Had to sleep in ds1's bed one night with ds2. It was a musical beds scenario - ds1 woke up in night got into bed with me and dh. Ds2 wakes up in night so rather than all four of us in our bed I went down to him. Unfortunately he had wet his bed so him & I climed into Ds1s bed. I got in ok. It was getting out that was the problem. Never again !!!!

prettycandles · 18/07/2004 18:31

I did use a fitted sheet! DH queried the need to buy fitted sheets when we already had several spare flat sheets, but after seeing me try to make the bed with those b@?*&%$y flat sheets and a handful of nappy pins he changed his mind.

Sounds like a good idea to get ds to do the tucking in and spare my poor little fingernails. I'll still have to climb in to get that corner in the corner.

DH said to me 'Why didn't you wait until I got home, then we could have taken the mattress out, put the sheet on, and put the mattress back in?' He can't help it - he's an engineer.

Mind you, the big advantage of such a high bed is that I can easily get right into the 'cave' and snuggle down with the children for a cosy read or play.

I had the same problem when we brought a mid sleeper for dd - but I used a cunning plan!!!!!

Get your dh to watch you changing the sheet - huff and puff and moan that the matress is too heavy for you to lift and your simply not tall enough to reach.

I did this a couple of times and now my dh cahnges the sheet for me

Blu · 18/07/2004 19:19

Sleeping bag. Do away with sheet changing and bed making, and get him a sleeping bag. Tell him it's a camping game....

prettycandles · 18/07/2004 19:34

Blu - what a stonking idea! A sleeping bag and a sheetbag liner, like in youth hostels, then I need only launder the liner.

Love ya!
