I have discovered a brilliant book which helps alleviate kids nerves about starting school.

It's a Ladybird book entitled "Talkabout My Big School". It's £3.99 and is from the Start School series.

Author is Richard Dungworth. ISBN Code is 184422015X.

As I am a real PC phobe I cannot do the thing to send you straight to the product, but the web address is www.ladybird.co.uk

Is there one to alleviate nerves in the parent?

DS1 started last year and he was fine - it was me who was a wreck!!

Oh no. I'm the same and DD hasn't even started yet.

She was offered a place at the local school where all her friends were going from nursery school too. Not a nice area but couldn't get a place in the nearest "nice" area school.

2Nice" area school offered us a place last Weds. We've accepted. She's seen the school and likes it, but she knows nobody.

Really worried but she does make friends easily.

me too soupy!!!! i am more nervous than he is!! he cant wait to start!! had his induction day the other day and loved it.....threw a strop when he couldnt go back the next day!! oh well....it wont last!!

DS1 knew nobody in his class - or in the entire 3 class intake or rest of the school! He settled in with ease, was disgusted that he could only go half days for 2 weks and was begging me to leave him there all day. Sigh.

First day I ushered him through the classroom door into the arms of a classroom assistant and ran out!! I didn't even stay to settle him in!

I'm sure DD will be the same. I've been told that it's always the parents that end up more upset than the kids.

I'm just worried about her falling asleep at her desk! It's such a long day.

I was looking forward to having a sleepy DS in need of an early bed time after school. It didn't happen. Bah! They can be irritable by the end of the week though.

Momp · 17/07/2004 14:49

DD attends her nursery school 2.5hrs a day - 1pm until 3.30pm and is tired when she gets home!

I suppose she'll have to get used to longer days.

DD starts next Jan and I am terrified that she won;t be able to handle a whole day - she has been in Nursery there for the last 7 months from 1 - 3.30 but all day is such a long time and she is sooo little and gets sooo tired!!

And it will be all soo much having to concentrate all day and use a knife and fork properly and get herself dressed for PE and stuff like that - and she has to go form the beginning all day - no half days or stuff like that!!

I am definately dreading it mroe than her - she is just sooo happy that she gets to wear a skirt everyday!!

Momp · 17/07/2004 15:27

Twinkie, you have said it all. I am experiencing exactly the same thoughts.

Why is parenthood one worry after another?

When she's started reception, I'll start worrying about her getting to and from secondary school on her own!

Or going up into year 1 and leaving the "transitional" year of Reception behind... can't believe how quickly the year has gone.
