Cost to convert car to wheelchair access

DH has seen a VW Caddy in an auction that he's get to get, to fit bikes in. I'm only interested if it could be accessible for my mum in her wheelchair (she can't use normal cars, as needs a hoist to get in and out of her wheelchair). It isn't yet.
Does anybody know an approximate ballpark figure to convert it - i.e., fit a ramp and ensure the wheelchair can be secured safely (I expect there are approved standards for such work?)
.
If you have any experience of having a car converted, I'd love to hear from you, as I know nothing so far!

As your mum is disabled she may get a car from motability. She doesn't need to be able to drive as someone can claim on her behalf as long as they are the ones who take her out the most often. That way they will pay for the car and the adaptions. Hope this helps a bit.

That's very interesting, thank you.
I'm not sure if she has the allowances at the moment required for the scheme, but I can certainly look into whether she's eligible for them - after she became disabled from a stroke she and my father received very little advice, apart from being told she had to pay for her nursing home!

She had her stroke too late to claim for the DLA and she's too old for the PIP, so she won't be eligible for Motability, despite being completely paralysed down one side - written off comes to mind.

So, any ideas about costs to convert?

Who gave the advice about benefits? It doesn't seem right.

I think it's pretty expensive to do. If it's important to you, you might be better buying one that has been adapted and been used on the Motability scheme. A quick google search found www.wheelchairaccessiblevehicles.co.uk/ and www.alliedmobility.com/used-wavs/?model=Caddy as dealer selling secondhand. The second one is a converter and they sell converted Caddys starting at around £19,500, but that may be before VAT as that's often not charged on adapted vehicles.

Thanks, Talbot, I think you're right.

Approx £1300 for hoist - you don't need a ramp with a hoist.

Sorry I read it wrong you meant a hoist for your mum sorry. My car has wheelchair hoist rather than a ramp. Cost £1600 but my chair is a very heavy electric chair.

Thanks AndNow. She has a manual and an electric one - the electric IS very heavy!
