Is it worth starting to use a sling at 8 months old?

I have just started looking at slings and can see the benefits.

I would like one that is easy to use, and that can be used with baby/toddler on my hip.

Any advice?

I think it is worth it.

What type are you looking at? Ring slings seem to be great for older babies as well as teenies.

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2007 22:32

Yes, totally worth it

I recommend Huggababy.

gingerninja · 28/03/2007 22:32

I was just about to ask the same for my six month old. It's a minefield

TwinklemEGGan · 28/03/2007 22:32

OMG Wallace, I can't imagine carrying my DS around in a sling now he's 8 months - the big lump (below average though apparently - you could've fooled me!)

TwinklemEGGan · 28/03/2007 22:33

Do you not all have really bad backs?

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2007 22:34

With a ringsling the baby rides on your hip and the weight is divided between your pelvis and shoulders

I carried ds everywhere until he was 2 stone

Spidermama · 28/03/2007 22:35

At 8 months old I'd go straight for the backpack as he'll be too big for a sling.

I can recommend the Vaude Jolie very highly. So comfy. Like a light rucksack. I carried mine 'til they were up to three in this and dh carried them even longer.

Wallace · 28/03/2007 22:35

Thanks

He is about 24 pounds BTW if that makes a difference.

twinkle - he is sooo clingy at the mo it would make such a difference if I could carry him arouns and do stuff at the same time. He is so heavy that I can't even carry him one armed for long without getting a very sore arm

Have you got a link for those Franny? I haven't heard of them before.

Wallace · 28/03/2007 22:38

www.huggababy.co.uk

They resell quite well on eBay

I think they are wonderful and I don't agree that he is too heavy at all

it is so cosy and companionable having a child slung on your hip - keeps them happy all round the shops

Thanks Fra

Must look on ebay tomorrow (off to bed now). I love the idea of having him up with me. I usually use an old fashioned pram where he sits up facing me, so he really doesn't like being in a buggy where he can't see me.

'Baby wearing' - i wish i had been more aware of this and wider Attachment Parenting philosophies when my children were still small.

ezridax · 28/03/2007 22:57

Don't know if this totally against the rules but there's a forum called the baby wearer that will be able to help

I used a Coorie for my son until he was about 18 months. I couldn't go to Costco without it!!

Wallace · 29/03/2007 15:56

The hippanda site isn't loading up?

I will also have look at the baby wearer site
