Ikea Hemnes Day Bed

We're just in the process of sorting out dd's new bedroom and are interested in the Ikea Hemnes range. Having had a look around yesterday, we came across the Hemnes day bed. Has anyone else got this? Or able to give advice? We were just going to go for a normal single, but this seems better value. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

thanks for the advice, Loopy. That was what i was a bit worried about, as would rather buy decent mattress and not worry so much about the 2nd one. Will have a bit more of a think...

Hey, I just bought a Hemnes daybed and was curious if you can put a regular mattress on it even if you do pull out into a double? It doesn't seem like the wood slots would hold a big mattress? Thoughts anyone that has it?

I was thinking about using a regular mattress on it as a single bed. Then when we have company throwing the foam one on it???? I was going to store the foam mattress under our bed (thanks Loopymumsy great advice)!!!

Thoughts anyone??

SweetApril · 09/05/2010 16:29

Hi. I have one of these beds. For occasional use the foam mattresses are fine. However, using a regular (by regular I assume you mean sprung or whatever) mattress on it as a single bed and storing the others is a good idea if you plan to use it as a single bed on a regular basis. We plan to do this when DD uses it as her big girl bed. Make sure you check the mattress size though - I don't think it's a standard size and so you'd probably need an Ikea one.

I don't really understand your first question. The wooden slots hold two (Ikea-sized) single mattresses side by side when it is pulled out. By "big" mattress, do you mean a double mattress? If so, that wouldn't work as the two singles together equate to a king size. But I don't see why you couldn't put a king size on it if it was pulled out. Maybe that's not what you mean though??

I love this bed so much I could rabbit on about it all day so feel free to ask any more questions

Hi,
we bought this bed for dd and we love it.

But I feel really stupid now as I didn't know it could turn into a double bed .

How?

It is not as wide as a normal single - it's only 80cm rather than 90cm.

SweetApril · 10/05/2010 10:32

Skinny that's fantastic! You really didn't know?! If you google Ikea Hemnes day bed images there are a few pics which show you how it opens out - sorry, I couldn't make any pic links work. It truly is a marvellous guest bed - although you do need the two foam mattresses for that! If you have the bed on a hard floor it should pull out easily but on a carpet Loopsy is right, you're better off with two people the first few times.

SweetApril · 10/05/2010 10:34

Ooh, I meant Loopy not Loopsy. Sorry, Loopymumsy.

I bought this bed for dd (now 10), I was very pleased with it, but sorry to say that it is now falling apart (Had it 3 years) . The Screws keep coming out where they hold up the base. It has never has harsh treatment and I am very disappointed. I thought it would last for a lot more years.

SweetApril · 10/05/2010 10:48

What a shame, Uggmum. I'd be really cheesed off. Have had mine at least 7 years with no problems (yet). Mine is actually the earlier "model" called the Visdalen day bed which is exactly the same as the Hemnes but with a wooden trim round the top and wooden drawer knobs - don't know whether that should make any difference to the quality though. Can it be saved by a bit of DIY?

uggmum · 10/05/2010 19:05

I am hoping dh can glue it or fill with and re-drill it. I love the bed and all the furniture matches.

smallishsheep · 10/05/2010 19:36

Aaaargh Loopy, you are on the same thread, 3 years apart [timewarp emoticon]
Incidentally, next time you go to Ikea, if you want to let a poor wee soul who can't drive tag along....

I'm in Edinburgh and thinking of turning sitting room of city centre flat into a guest room for some festival room lets-also my dear boyfriend snores so I wouldn't mind having somewhere else to sleep when it gets noisy. I thought this looked like a good solution, but on ikea site could only see foam mattresses to go with it, does anyone who has one know whether it can fit sprung mattresses?
Thanks!

drscoutmama · 10/09/2017 02:16

Hi there,

We just bought the IKEA Hemnes Daybed for our 2 year olds first bed. The mattress that we picked up which we thought was suggest (and seems to be suggested one online) is the Meistervik Twin. Turns out though that it is about 4 inches short for the bed. I don't understand? Can someone help me troubleshoot this? Planning to return back to the store tomorrow which was not my plan. Does not seem to be anyone in customer service that can help me on the phone her. Thanks for your thoughts

Hi
I’m wanting to buy the ikea Hermes day bed. I have just also brought a brand new single mattress. Will this fit the day bed? Can anybody help? Didn’t want a foam mattress from ikea 😬

vxdxa · 13/06/2021 18:34

Hey did you ever get an answer to this? As I’m in the exact same situation! :)

HoppingPavlova · 24/06/2021 14:33

If you plan to use it as a single routinely the foam mattresses should be fine as they stack, so you are lying on two. I think ours are the Malfors which were the recommended ones to use with it when we got it. If you plan to use it pulled out routinely you may want to rethink. The person who uses it here is extremely light (prob 45kg) and even when pulled out they have no issue at all laying on a single mattress and would happily do so routinely. I’m waaaaaayyyyyy down the other end of the weight spectrum and find the 2 mattresses stacked fine and could do that permanently but single layer pulled out, could do the odd night but longer stints or permanently, nope.

Freezingtoes · 30/06/2021 22:20

We have had this bed for many years. The two foam mattresses were fine for a child but as DD grew up we replaced the mattresses (and kept them should they ever be required) with a single mattress from IKEA, the extra long one which fits in length but is a little wide. All we did was pull out the base by a few cm. DD was reluctant to get rid of the bed as the storage is great.

BoxHedge · 15/07/2021 22:54

We’ve had one for several years. Love the huge drawers for bedding and towels.

We have 2 foam mattresses that are actually made from 3 separate bits, not sure why that is, come to think of it!

One of us sleeps on it as a single probably half the time in total. I find it perfectly comfortable, but DH moans about it after a week or so.

We also use it as a double for visitors a few nights a year. If it’s on a deep-pile carpet it’s hard/heavy to roll out into a double - need someone strong or 2 people.

secondchapter · 18/07/2021 21:20

I had one in the living room for occasional use with the foam mattresses. Put it upstairs and used it every night and not comfortable. Bought a double sprung mattress recently and that works well, the slats just overlap in the middle, the bedroom upstairs is a bit small for a king.

GilbertsLuckySocks · 31/07/2021 01:38

Is this the one with 3 drawers below and the pull out trundle bed? That’s what we have. Secondhand prices are pretty low, as little as £50.

Ikea Malfors mattress fits the Hemnes day bed,

Standard singles are about 5” too short.

The drawer sides are just mdf which can fail if kids jump on the bed too much.

The bed frame is actually pretty solid, as are the slats and drawer fronts, but the drawer walls and bases are flimsy.
