Hi all,

Ive been thinking about starting a small business venture whilst on maternity and thought possibly pre-packed maternity bags may be something worth looking into. They would include:

For Mum:
Black baggy t-shirt
Sports bra
Cotton underwear
Pack of maternity pads
Breast pads
Travel sized -
Shower gel
Shampoo
Conditioner
Moisturiser
Face wash
Antibacterial
Toothbrush
Full size deodorant
Slippers
A sports drink
Snacks (small bags of nuts, crisps, crackers, etc)
Hair bands
Lip balm

For baby:
Baby vest
Short sleeved baby grow
Long sleeved baby grow
Sleepsuit
Hat
Mittens
Socks
Baby blanket
Muslin squares
Nappies
Sensitive baby wipes
Cotton wool
Nappy sacks

What do you all think? Something you would buy/be interested in? Also what price would you be happy to pay?

Thanks!

Personally I would go with packing your own hospital bag using this list and the ones available from e.g. The mothercare app as a starting point. I made the mistake of following blindly a list and ended it with a bulky dressing gown and slippers that I couldn't bear to wear as the maternity ward in the summer was ridiculously hot. And there are a couple of immediately obvious things I would include e.g. Disposable underwear (so much easier than fiddling about with normal pants) and a bottle of water spray. It depends on your due date of course. I would also pack more nappies, wipes etc than you think you will need, at least 10 nappies and a whole pack of water wipes. Bear in mind you may be in overnight, and you will be sweating and probably leaking uncontrollably, so 2 loose comfortable long tops or nighties are much more practical than pyjamas or a nice looking top. Also there are clothing options for baby here but I would pack at least 3 easy to change outfits (babygro, not separates, you will not want to fuck about with tiny baby jeans at 2am when you have a meconium nappy and you're trying not to wake up the whole ward)! Plus a baby blanket - not a grobag even if you are planning on using them at home, they are not suitable for newborns generally. That's my brain dump for now!

No would rather do own.
May be option for very luxury ones but not a cheap style one

DubiousCredentials · 07/08/2017 20:21

Why a sports bra? Confused

2014newme · 07/08/2017 20:36

Most of women want bras that fit them properly

MujosMama · 07/08/2017 20:43

I'm assuming because they are crop top style rather than wired? But I agree I took 2 proper nursing bras that I had chosen, much more comfy And easier to feed in!

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 07/08/2017 20:47

It sounds like something work might buy as a leaving present when you go on maternity. But actually, I think most people would rather choose those things themselves, particularly the baby clothes. Also, mums to be come in such a vast range of shapes and sizes you'd never get clothes that fitted properly ( and wouldn't most
Women rather have their favourite old tshirt and familiar clothes)?

InDubiousBattle · 07/08/2017 20:58

Not something I would want. It's something I would want to do for myself, too many variables (sizes of bras, t shirts, baby clothes, seasons), all if the things in the bag are easily bought (you could get it all in one super market trip)so a pre packed one wouldn't be saving a major job IYSWIM.

MeltorPeltor · 07/08/2017 21:01

I've done 90% of my hospital bag shopping on my Ocado shop and the rest via Amazon Prime, it wasn't tricky. I plan to shove it all in my wheelie flight case and forget about for the foreseeable future!

Robinkitty · 07/08/2017 21:05

I'd always want to pack my own, spent a long time finding out what I'd need and getting the stuff specifically what I wanted, it wasn't a chore.

fluffywhitecarpet · 07/08/2017 21:06

I prefer to do my own bag with having preferences for certain products.

Sizes could be a problem unless you would tailor make each bag to each customer with their requested clothing and underwear sizes?

Wash bags with toiletries and maternity products etc might be be better way to go?

Tobuyornot99 · 07/08/2017 21:07

Sorry OP but I personally don't see it as a business venture that would be used by any of the people I know. I really enjoyed preparing my hospital bag, there are loads of resources available to guide you, it's just something far too personal to buy "off the peg "

Migraleve · 07/08/2017 21:07

Sorry I wouldn't go for it either.

Mrsknackered · 07/08/2017 21:32

Another one who wouldn't go for it. I think the logistics of it wouldn't work.
Sorry OP!

An affordable range of nice nursing bra's is a good shout though! I couldn't find any either time!

Stuckinstressville · 07/08/2017 21:33

I actually researched this as a business and charity venture and the issue I found was people wanted home touches and bespoke. For how close to due date, nature of birth etc . To make it interesting I spoke to a local
Charity and they said the usp would be for speed of Delivery ( haha....) as Those not prepared would want immediately as they entered into labour. For preemies I couldn't make it add up financially and for charity and it would have to be mega high end organic made by the fairies to be worth it. Most
Women I asked loved doing their own.

Good luck!

MoveOnTheCards · 07/08/2017 21:37

I actually enjoyed putting together my bag and think it's a very personal thing at the time you're doing it so I wouldn't want to buy something like this. Sorry.

NC4now · 07/08/2017 21:37

I wouldn't go for it either. There are a lot of very personal items there and I'd rather pick and choose my own.
Besides, it's fun shopping for these things when you go off on mat leave.

snoopypoodle · 08/08/2017 11:03

I think the only thing that could entice people into buying a pre packed one would be "top shelf" items and products from sought after brands. And only if buying the bag meant that it all worked out cheaper than them buying it all separately.

In other words it would probably be a bit of a niche market and carry a big price tag.
