Im about to throw laptop through the window.

Im crap with computers, its no secret.

Does a wireless router have to be connected to a modem?

Reason I ask is because Dp has just purchased a Wireless router in order for me to get rid of the wires surrounding me on my laptop.

Im trying to set it all up, but it appears that I still have the cable modem out and have to have this connected to wireless router......surely this defeats the object?

  1. am I doing something wrong.
  2. has dp purchased wrong router.
  3. shall I just give up now?????????

PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE!!!

DP should have purchased a wireless ADSL router, this has a modem built in. If not, the modem will be connected to the router but not to your laptop. You could still tuck it away discreetly.

can ASDLe only be used between old phonelines though? Im with telewest broadband

Telewest do their own. Not sure of the ins and outs but most standard ADSL modems need a BT line.

we have telewest - cable modem goes into back of wireless router, nothing plugged into laptop

tiredemma · 21/03/2007 17:37

hattie- so you still have 'wires' so to speak from cable connection to modem?

Yes, the modem is where the wire comes in from outside so both the modem and wireless router are hidden behind the tv

tiredemma · 21/03/2007 17:42

its ok- my connection was set up in the kitchen as I only have a laptop and wanted to do my college/uni work at the kitchen table.
Therefore I have wires trailing from the wall, over the kitchen table to my modem and laptop.
I thought that getting wireless would eradicate this but because I have to keep it attatched to the modem, im still surrounded by wires that cannot be hidden!!!

Argh!

Laptop should only have a power lead and wireless adaptor (if needed)
router should be plugged into power and into phone socket (no idea about cable though)
I have just done mine but spend 1/2 time not getting online/on network [grr]

HoppyDaddy · 22/03/2007 10:32

Cable modem should be plugged into wireless router. Nothing should be plugged into laptop, except power lead.

If cable modem and router are incomptible, you may need to get Telewest's own one.

Does your laptop definitely have WiFi (to enable it to 'tune in' to the wireless signal)? Newer laptops usually have them built in, but you still have to make sure the right settings are switched on so that it 'receives'.

On older models you may have to buy a little attachment thing that plugs into a USB port in order to pick up the signal. If you take it to PC World or somewhere like that they should be able to advise.
