Ok, there is one going through Tescos direct at the mo. It's an Acer Aspire and is 399.00. It's a pretty good make. Bit more than your budget tho. I am sure there are cheaper ones on there, but this is a good buy.

A dvd rewrite + means that you can download films, record them and then record again over that disc.

You can also put albums onto disc.

I am going to take back my statement that the Acer is good BTW as I have just spent the evening with someone who 'knows'. It's not very much memory apparently for me.

But they are a good firm and if you need to speak to someone at the end of the phone, you will.

try misco .co .uk they usually have some good deals, I got an HP nx310 recently and it had £50 cash back offer.

Essbee did you buy one in the end? I just got a good deal as mine broke last night and thought of this thread.

Ooh essbee did you get a tax rebate or something?

Don't forget you can always ask Christie's DH for advice. Let me know if you want his email.

Well, I was going to get a £250 medion laptop in Woolworths as I thought it was a good deal (ultra lightweight 40gb 256 hd) it's still PM as £399 and scans at £250 but luckily they were out of stock in my local.

So I came home and checked Dell out and got the following much better spec for £327.83 (inc Vat & delivery)

AMD® Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL50

Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic - English

90 Day Collect & Return Service

15.4" Wide Screen XGA TFT Display: 1280x800

1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)

120GB (5,400 rpm) Hard Drive

Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software

ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory

4Cell 29WHr Primary battery

If you do go for it make sure you go through Quidco for 4.5% cashback too.

Easiest way to look at this deal is to use the shop by ecode link in the left hand menu on Dell home page and type in 305 and N03153.

Quidco is just one of those shopping cashback sites, they are very good - I got £100 cashback last year on my car insurance.

I had my confirmation email from Dell earlier and it will be here on or before next Tuesday, so that's pretty good as I'm not paying delivery. If you haven't chosen one by then I'll let you know what it's like.

PS - the one that just broke was only 18 months old and a HP Compaq, the screen had several lines down it and last night the 'male bit' of the dc jack (where the power supply goes in) broke off so I had to frantically save all my stuff before the battery went.
I won't be buying another!

Just a quickie, but I think that 80 gb and 512 ram isn't very fast these days on a laptop. I am only telling you what I ahve been told and it seems like you are buying less. HTH

I would not buy the woolworths thingy, go for the Dell, but keep your guarantee.

somersetmum · 26/03/2007 22:34

Warning to anyone buying a laptop: they are notoriously difficult to repair, so make sure it is insured.
On Friday, our 15 month old laptop refused to boot up, so we took it back to well-known pc shop. dh explained the problem, the guy flipped it over and immediately identified the problem as being the internal pin that connects the mains cable has come loose from the motherboard. Extremely common problem across all makes and most likely a terminal problem, as components in a laptop are so small they are near impossible to fix. Fortunately, we took out the £9.99 per month all inclusive insurance policy, so if they can't fix it we will get vouchers to the value of a comparible replacement.

bubblerock · 26/03/2007 22:44

It's next Tuesday - or before, I was happy with the price for the spec compared to other online places, my desktop is Dell and it's taken everything I've thrown at it so far
Hi Yorkie!!
Somersetmum - that's what happened to my previous laptop, very annoying!
