give us the name of five books you have really enjoyed.

If you like a bit of gentle political satire which is slightly reminiscent of yes minister I would recommend "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" by ?Alan Torday.

there's a brand new paperback out by Richard Gwyn called "Deep Hanging Out", and a new one by Marina Lewycka out the very end of this month called "Two caravans" (about immigrant fruit pickers IIRC).

If you like imitation Victoriana, how about "Meaning of Night" by Michael Cox or "The Dark Clue" by James Wilson (sort of sequel to the woman in white, lots of references to biogs of Turner).

If you are interested in the Pre-Raphaelites at all there is an interesting biog of Lizzie Siddall by Lucinda Hawksley.

For matters spiritual, "Beyond Black" by Hilary Mantel possibly?

bossykate · 22/03/2007 10:23

thank you v. much mts

i have in fact read "beyond black" and thought it was very interesting - although ultimately flawed

Aother vote for Sarah Waters -though I preferred Fingersmith to Nightwatch.
I'm currently reading Silvertown by Melanie McGrath which I'm finding interesting.
She documents her grandmother's childhood in the East End at the turn of the century.
Also Diary of An Ordinary Woman by Margaret Forster is a fascinating insight into a life of a woman in first half of twentieth century.
Favourite novel recently- The Kite Runner.

bossykate · 22/03/2007 15:58

thank you articroll, i also preferred fingersmith to the night watch, haven't read tipping the velvet so that might be another suggestion...
