How to clean jute flooring
Tissy · 17/06/2002 13:57
When I was heavily pregnant, we decided to have two downstairs rooms re-carpeted. We decided on a "natural" flooring, and having looked around a bit, decided on a woven jute type from John Lewis. At the time the salesman assured us that it was hard-wearing and suitable for a living room. After it was fitted, I telephoned Jon Lewis's, as there were no Care Instructions left for us. I was told that all you can do is vacuum it! It is now pretty filthy, although it looks OK if hoovered every day (!) and I desperately want to clean it- any ideas? Has anyone else got a jute floor covering and if so what do you do??
I tried to complain to JL, but they say I should have asked about cleaning prior to purchase (I suppose they have a point). I think the salesman can't have failed to notice that we were imminently about to produce a child, and perhaps should have thought about the types of noxious fluid that would emanate from it onto our lovely floor!
Anyone else pregnant and about to buy new flooring go for lino!!!

Tissy, I had jute rugs for my ponies, not flooring I know, and they did shrink so I would be careful that your flooring doesnt do the same. Perhaps one of those steam cleaners would do the trick, as you can use those on curtains and stuff.

I have seagrass and sisal. Use the MINIMUM of water but the general rule for stain removal is:
Detergent, blot, ammonia, blot, vinegar, blot, detergent, blot, water, blot.
Wait 'till you start potty training! Then you'll wish you had industrial rubber flooring. Preferably on the sofas and chairs too

Thanks, wickedwaterwitch, unfortunately "how to clean anything.com" has no info on jute flooring, and their "ask a pro" service has been overloaded and therefore disabled!!
Anyone else got any ideas?

Try here . Unfortunately it seems to say don't wash it, but haven't looked at the rest of the site, there might be something there.
