'Nice' dark wooden bookcase

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 09:44

I am looking for a large bookcase, with adjustable shelves. ideally made from a dark wood. The only things I can find on the net or either too flimsy looking or wrong style.
Anybody got any ideas?

What about Cotswold co - they have quite a lot of dark wood stuff.

MrsBadger · 20/03/2007 09:55

what kind of style do you need? Antique / modern / shaker?

Biglips · 20/03/2007 09:57

they've got gorgeous ones in IKEA

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 10:06

MrsB - Ideally I'd like something sleek - with smooth lines/edges. More antique than modern, but having said that don't want the fussiness of antique.
I think something like this would be nice, but I'd like to be able to adjust the shelves. (thanks for Cotswolds link Cmac)

Have a look in Habitat - website is all Flash so impossible to link to

I do like that Costwold one though - how important are the adjustable shelves?

MrsBadger · 20/03/2007 10:18

(NB will an Ikea Billy not cut it?)

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 10:19

Well I'd trade adjustable shelves for shelves of different height / sizes. Actually I'd trade them all for a nice bookcase!!! Maybe I'll explore the Cotsolds one a bit more........

or a Bonde - this one comes in this colour.

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 10:21

oooh the Ikea Billy is nice too - am just afraid it might look too plasticy (we are about to move into our 'forever' house, so I am willing to pay a bit more for something that will still look nice after 10 years)

don't want doors - I will use them to hide my mess!!! Open shelves force me to be neat!

ah right, I see - the Billys look fine (we have several ) but agree they're not forever pieces.

JackieNo · 20/03/2007 10:25

How about this one or this ?

JackieNo · 20/03/2007 10:25

Is this dark enough?

JackieNo · 20/03/2007 10:27

Or this ? (maybe a bit too rustic for you)

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 10:27

I'd quite like ones that sit flat on the ground - I think there's less chance of them falling over if / when the DSs try to climb up them!!! Also I find the tops of those a bit too fussy Jackie

. No problem. Is this too light a wood?

Enid · 20/03/2007 10:33

habitat do one

we have a good one from Heals - not dark but a kind of greyish greeny coluor v nice

WaynettaSlob · 20/03/2007 10:34

It's a bit too light and too rustic (fussy or what!!! ). I want the bookcase to go in the sitting room so want it a but more 'formal' IYKWIM.

Next do some. We have the Markor dark range from Ikea but it does chip. The ones in the Next cat look better quality more expensive too so they should be. Oh I remember the dark wood book shelf search. We gave up and bought Ikea with a view to buying antique at a later date should we win the lottery. SIL had a carpenter make some lovely but not cheap- good luck

Pannacotta · 20/03/2007 22:05

Habitat Kuda range is dark, sleek, quite modern though. You can adjust the middle shelves. Have them in my home office - our house is Victorian and I think they work well.

I watched house dr once and she got a basic book shelf from IKEA and stained it dark - looked really good when finished and prob at a fraction of the price!
