Condesing tumble dryers (yawn)

Can anyone recommend one? Want the sort where the pull out water bit in at the top not the bottom. There are so many out there I just don't know what to get. Is there a big diff between the cheapo ones and the Bosch/Miele £500 ish ones?

Also the fluff filter must be easily accessible as don't want to spend half life grovelling around at back of drum.

It is to go in a big bathroom cupboard (ie lots of space around it) - do I need a special built in type or can I just get a normal one and leave the cupboard door open.

TIA

ring John lewis

i rang htme ans asked for what i wanted ( basic trumble dryer - vented)and they told me what it was ( and I bought it ont he phone!

spacemonkey · 10/07/2004 14:48

i've got a hotpoint one (cheapo), it's perfectly serviceable - the fluff filter is on the inside of the door (convenient), and the water bit is at the bottom (a bit of a faff). Used to have a whirlpool one which had the water bit at the top (much easier) and also made a buzzing sound to tell you it was nearly done (irritating)

codswallop · 10/07/2004 14:48

my fluff is there too!

mummytojames · 10/07/2004 14:49

i got a creda condenser dryer it fits under or small work top it cost 189.00 water draw at the front and the filter in the door just pulls straight out i love it oh its called creda simplicity condenser dryer and we got it from currys and yes they deliver

Tetley · 10/07/2004 14:53

We've got one but I personally wouldn't recommend them - next time we'll buy a 'normal' i.e. vented one.

It seems to take a very long time to dry a washing load - plus it still fills the room with steam - we always have to have a window open - so to my mind defeats the purpose.

spacemonkey · 10/07/2004 14:54

i've never had the slightest puff of steam out of mine

mine takes a couple of hours to dry a full load, and it doesn't seem expensive to run (my elec bills are v reasonable anyway)

mummytojames · 10/07/2004 14:55

tetly what make have you got because i never have that problem with mine the kitchen gets warm but thats it and i find that it takes the same amount of time as my mother in laws pipe dryer

Bagpuss30 · 10/07/2004 15:04

Have Hotpoint one, same as Spacemonkey. Very good IMO. Washing dries really quickly but you do have to remember to clean out the condenser unit every once in a while which is not difficult. I have mine in a cupboard under the stairs with things on top of it, stacked up against the side of it (which is probably wrong) and have never had any probs with it.

CountessDracula · 10/07/2004 15:07

yes Tetley pls could you tell me what make yours is so I can avoid it!

Thanks everyone else

just a thought, had a gas one by cannon - moved didnt have gas supply at right place, bill went up by 4x, went back to 2nd hand gas one last year, costs peanuts too run, no diff to ordinary driers- worn it out just about to source new one, if interested white knight make them, plus a few otheres

nutcracker · 10/07/2004 15:22

I've just had a indesit one for 250 and it's fab. The water thingy is at the bottom though, but i haven't found it a problem.
The fluff thingy is at the front.

We asked about ventulation as ours is under the worktop and quite a tight fit, but it is fine. There is a slight gap at the top which is plenty of room apparently.

I expected my electric to dwindle really quickly when it was on but it's been fine.

I would noe be in laundry heavan if the washing machine would work properly.

We have a bosch one - £450 as I recall - but that is built in so that woiuld have put the price up.

Filter is in the door - easy to clean
Water is in the top - equivalent of the drawer that you put the powder in for a washing machine, pull out and pour away, put back in - about 30 secs

Have to say it has been brilliant - no problems and is in constant use - even during the summer as gets everything so soft.

LIZS · 10/07/2004 15:44

We've got a Bosch one with drawer at top. Access to fluff filter is at bottom front but you do have to get on floor to do it (recommended only every 6 months or so) and there is the lint one on inside of door. Ours has an option to drain the condensation straight into a waste outlet like a washing machine. It was second hand but fairly new when we got it so no idea how much they really cost but have to say wouldn't get a condensor if had the choice but like you our position has no vent.

Tetley · 10/07/2004 17:36

So the brand to avoid is 'Crusader'! It's one of the 'own-brand' ones from Comet (I think) - bought because it was cheap, but as they say - you get what you pay for, obviously!

DelGirl · 10/07/2004 17:49

I've got a white knight one (argos) and actually silver! It's got a sensor so it turns itself off when it's finished. Though it will come on again for a few minutes if your clothes are still in there to stop them from creasing. I think it cost me about £230. It has a bottle at the top which you just pull out and empty and a 'fluff' collector in the drum which you pull out after each wash!

Highly recommended and like SM, my electric bills aren't high. Don;t really notice much difference at all really and I use it all the time.

DelGirl · 10/07/2004 17:50

I meant to say it will come on again for a few minutes after about half an hour.

aloha · 10/07/2004 17:52

I have a VERY cheap Proline one which works perfectly, has the water thingy at the bottom and the fluff filter at the front and is very easy to use. Mine's in a big kitchen cupboard and I often shut the doors while it is working. It's not a special built in one at all. It's perched on top of the washing machine, actually.

aloha · 10/07/2004 17:53

No steam with ours either. Why water thing at the top and not the bottom CD? Because ours is on top of the washing machine it's high up anyway.

xoz · 10/07/2004 17:55

Had a Zanussi one which worked very well at the last place we lived. Water at the bottom - no problem, fluff thing inside, also no problem... no idea how much it cost or what model.. it just came with the rental property, but it was fine...

CountessDracula · 10/07/2004 18:00

aloha no bottom pully outy thing because it's in a cupboard and there is a step down into it, therefore the pully outy thing would hit the step and not be able to come out. Not just laziness I assure you!
