I am a Fashion Design and Marketing student, and looking at final year project ideas. One idea I have been thinking about is creating a toddler wear collection for Mothercare that looks at creating clothes that uses particular design features that would teach the toddler...so 'clothes that teach'.

What do you think to this?
Anyone have any ideas or advice?

Your help would be much appreciated as my tutors at present are not too keen on the idea but I am really passionate about it!!

I'm not quite sure I understand what this will entail...can you share some more ideas? I have to be honest, my first opinion is that it's strange to have stuff on children's clothes to teach them. There are clearly better ways of doing this - i.e normal toys that can be handled and really examined and played with. Children's clothes should keep a child warm and comfortable. I can't see how these objectives can be bedfellows with learning as such. Also, wouldn't the child just be sort of staring down at it's own clothes?! Would they do this as opposed to just playing with their toys?

To be honest I can't think of anything worse than extra distractions on a toddler outfit. They need to be easy to put on, easy to take off, be comfortable for the child and easy to wash for the parents. Everything else is just aesthetics.

There are so many everyday objects toddlers learn gross and fine motor skills from along with the thousands of different toys. I personally wouldn't bother buying an item like this.

Well basically, I did another project where I looked at creating knee pads/elbow pads for toddlers with haemophilia (as my brother has it). I came up with the idea of having the pads being placed in a toddler book via velcro. The pads would turn in to fictional animals on each page of the book, so that the toddler can start to learn about the different animals of the world. The toddler would 'read' the book and then would be able to choose which pad they would want to wear that day, giving them the opportunity of changing the pad on the knee/elbow. The actual body of the product would look similar to these knee pads: www.bellatunno.com/baby-knee-pads.html. Pls don't judge me on that idea.....hahaha.
But with this in mind, I was thinking of possibly using this idea of the book and taking things off a t-shirt......sorry my ideas are very limited, I just wanted to see what peoples reactions would be to see if my tutors were correct...and I think they are....;) as atm we just need to gather concepts/ideas from anything and not to narrow them down straight but to research/explore as much as we can. Thanks for your feedback guys!

As a mother of two, I wouldn't buy these clothes for the reasons above. I hope you don't feel discouraged though, keep going and a great idea is just round the corner I'm sure x
