Hi, can anyone recommend any good cd's of Irish welsh or scottish ceildh music, preferably instrumental. We had a ceildh at our wedding and would love some cd's to play for ds.

I play in a ceilidh band, but we're not quite professional enough to make any CDs - two or three gigs a year kind of thing, but it is my only source of income (apart from the child benefit). Try Haste to the Wedding for an Irish band who play Scots and Irish ceilidh music and have a great CD for a tenner. You can also check out MP3 clips on the site. I'd do you a copy, but you know with me being a semi-pro musician and all (hee hee) I couldn't take the money out of a colleague's pocket.

I've got a great CD from the band who play at the Riverside Club ceilidhs on the Renfrew Ferry in Glasgow. It was a prezzy, so i'm not sure if it's in the shops but will have a google.

Actually, I've never played ceilidh stuff to ds I bet he would love it - thanks for the idea

Actuallly loads of ceilidh bands play at the Riverside so now I'm flummoxed!

Check out Altan, they have a website WWW.altan.ic,and also Solas they are on Shanachie music label,I particularly like these groups as my daughter was an Irish dancer untill just recently and danced to a couple of the tracks on a Solas album, enjoy your listening, love B

I second Altan - Harvest Storm is my favourite of theirs. Another band I'm playing a lot of at the mo is Malinky - the 3 Ravens CD - Scottish traditional stuff - a lot of it is up tempo - my ds jogs around in his highchair to it - but some beautiful slow tunes also. Shooglenifty also are fab.

boudicca · 08/07/2004 01:39

I'll have to check those two out phatcat,I've not heard Harvest Storm,I really like the jigs and reels, and the traditional stuff.

boudicca · 08/07/2004 01:41

phatcat, you'll have to take your ds to dance classes!

phatcat · 08/07/2004 01:55

LOL boudica!

On the subject of Irish dancing - why are there no arm movements? I've always wondered ...

mummyji · 08/07/2004 23:13

Thanks for your replies, i've ordered the haste to the wedding one and will check out the others. ds loved the mp3 clips

Phatcat re.straight arms in Irish dancing,I think it was because the priests/church thought it would promote lewd behaviour(!)or some such thing.

Gaelic Storm are really good, very lively. ds is 2 and he loves them, starts dancing as soon as you put it on!
Did you see "Titanic", remember the bit where she went below deck and they were all having a great party, lots of ceili music and dancing?? Gaelic Storm were the band that were playing!

i havent looked at their website so i dont know if it has any music clips.
