Is a trip trap highchair worth the money?

kentuckyfreudchicken · 13/03/2007 17:58

Need a new highchair, hate foul cossato aurora I had but swore would never spend ridiculous amount of money on a highchair again.
So is it worth it and any cheaper alternatives anyone can suggest?

loks liek a torture instrument

tortoiseSHELL · 14/03/2007 14:58

well I love my babyDan one so there! It looks lovely and is easy to clean, and wasn't very expensive compared to the tripp trapp. And I love it. And so does ds2. And it will come to pieces to be stored once we've finished with it - can't do that with crappy ikea one - straight to landfill !!!!

AitchYouBerk · 14/03/2007 15:22

you can take the crappy ikea one apart, as it happens. i stick it in the car when we're going to pals' houses.
and given that mine is already third-hand, yes, you're probably right, i may not store it. i'll give it to someone else who thinks that spending £140 on a highchair is a big fat waste of money.

tortoiseSHELL · 14/03/2007 15:29

Aitch, you sound offended - don't be! Only responding to 'wank' comment!

Would it help if I said I loved the Ikea ones?

no not offeded, but i do think that the tripp-trappers should just come out and say 'i want it cos i want it' and stop trying to justify the expense with longevity. they want it cos they think it looks cool. i'm iclined to agree that it looks cool, especially the red one, but that's the only reason to buy it. it's not inherently better than other seats, in fact my friends who have it have been heard to comment that it's hard to clean because of the fabric inserts.

MrShev · 14/03/2007 15:55

We had a Mamas and Pappas highchair that was designed by childless imbeciles and bought the tripp trapp one because it looks cool and goes with our furniture and is easy to clean.

It is a good highchair and DS loves it. Wanted to get the IKEA one but they were out of stock every time I phoned. Just wanted a good one.

prettybird · 14/03/2007 15:57

I like it 'cos my parents bought it as a Christmas present for ds, so the cost was irrelevant for me!

Having said that, I've liked it so much, if we had been able to have antoher kid, I'd have probably bought another one for the new baby. But at least I owuldn't have had to buy the baby kit!

tortoiseSHELL · 14/03/2007 16:00

Glad you're not offended! I'm in between - couldn't justify cost of tripptrapp, but like the babydan one (£59.99!). Using it without fabric inserts, so is a dream to clean!

Mumpbump · 14/03/2007 16:10

We bought it because we liked the look of it, the fact it was real wood, rather than plastic and because it can be used as a seat. I wouldn't buy the cushion set as it gets ruined...

BUT, you will need to buy a harness as they're quite easy to climb out of. And I find that the gap between the seat and the bar is quite narrow so if ds isn't being co-operative, it can be quite tricky to get him to sit down in it.

But still looks nice!

Mumpbump · 14/03/2007 16:10

PS - the other reason we liked it was because ds could sit at the table properly with us...

Enid · 14/03/2007 17:15

my ikea one has done three kids

it has earned its place in the dump

tortoiseSHELL · 14/03/2007 17:18

enid

kentuckyfreudchicken · 14/03/2007 17:23

oooooo, feeling myself changing my mind! £140 is a huge amount to spend on highchair!

Is the ikea one suitable for a 6month old and does it have a harness???

The Tripp Trapp, once set as a normal chair doesn't look anything like a highchair though, so doesn't look odd at all. DD's school friends - all age 5 - all are keen to sit at it as it gives them a better position at the dinner table.

We have never described DD's Tripp Trapp as a highchair. It has always just been her chair. She has also seen me use it on occasions, so knows it can last to adulthood. Never been an issue.

As a shorter than average adult I know alltoo well what it is like to have to sit on some chairs and not be able to reach the floor or the table as well as I should. It's a pain. Why would I want my DD to have to eat every meal like that?

And you know the main reason I bought it? Because it looked good! And when you are open plan living, and these things are on show, then yes - I like my furniture to look good. It matches the rest of out stuff quite well and doesn't look like baby furniture, esp not now. The last thing I want in my living room was some horrid (IMO) plastic brightly coloured thing if I am honest!

Hulababy · 14/03/2007 17:37

Mumpbump - yes, also agree. Loved the fact that DD was sat at the table with us, rather than isolated with her own tray.

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2007 18:21

YES O god YES

great product hard wearing looks smart baby can sit with u not stuck behind plastic tray

seat looks okay when not in use - does not look too babyish/bulky/ugly

seat grows with the child

recommend

Rantum · 14/03/2007 18:26

I got an ikea one ANTILOP for 11.99. It has been brilliant easy to clean (tray can even fit in the dishwasher) and can be easily disassembled for transport. I toyed with the idea of a more "designer" chair, but decided on a more budget option and I am SOOO glad I did (more dosh to spend on baby clothes!)

Bagpuss30 · 14/03/2007 18:27

No, no, Enid, you have to do what my mum did and flog it to a fellow grandmother friend for £10 .

Rantum · 14/03/2007 18:28

oh yeah and tray lifts right off so baby can also sit at table with no problem

Enid · 14/03/2007 18:41

"As a shorter than average adult I know alltoo well what it is like to have to sit on some chairs and not be able to reach the floor or the table"

lolol hula are you tinsy

hana · 14/03/2007 18:50

it does look good of course, but is also ergonomically correct, as the baby/toddler/child grows, you can adjust the seat and footrest so feet arent' dangling and their posture is straight.
things that are good for you can also look good as well

dunscared · 14/03/2007 18:52

Well worth the money
both kids at table from about 5 months when able to sit with a bit of support
makes eating a real family event
daughter now 2.5 drags hers around kitchen to use as a stool to help!!! her words with washing up and making dinner.

Hulababy · 14/03/2007 20:19

No Enid; I'm 5 foot. But have been to restaurants where I can't reach the floor properly and it is a pain. Went out last Friday lunch infact. Chairs were really high. Even with heels on I could only put my toes to the floor. Not a comfortable eating position at all!

AitchYouBerk · 14/03/2007 20:21

but you can buy a chair with a foot bar in ikea...
