Tell me About Natural/ Organic Baby Toiletries

I only know about Burt's Bees products. What other lovely, gentle brands are out there for me to stock up on before baby arrives?

I feel like doing some interweb shopping.

(Yes this is partly a work avoidance tactic for a Friday afternoon. )

for you or for baby?

frazzledfairy · 09/03/2007 18:25

lush's 'honey i washed the kids' is gorgeous, lasts ages and is 100% natural!

Green People are excellent for adults and children IMO. They are an ethical UK firm and the products are good quality and also go a long way, so that you only need to use a tiny amount.

Their no perfumed base shampoo is the only one that I can personally use - and I have tried virtually ALL the other brands I can assure you

Greensleeves · 09/03/2007 18:27

They're expensive!

Greensleeves · 09/03/2007 18:28

Have just bought a packet of biodegradable baby wipes for £2.90

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 18:28

These are the ingredients for Honey I washed the Kids

Ingredients: Honey Water (Mel, Aqua), Propylene Glycol, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Perfume, Beeswax (Cera alba), Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus dulcis), Bergamot Oil (Citrus bergamia), Aloe Vera Extract (Aloe barbadensis), Sodium Chloride, Glycerine, EDTA, Tetrasodium Editronate, Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides), Titanium Dioxide, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate.

Propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulphate are two of the chemicals that we are recommended to avoid in skincare products, especially for babies

octopussyintummy · 09/03/2007 18:28

I avoid all bubble bath and shampoo for the whole family with parabens and lauryl suplahet as it makes us all itch! You can get some lovely stuff from Natalia, Neals yard, Green baby, Halos n Horns, Mama Mio - there are loads! Check out the ingredients - while 80% of midwives use Johnson & Johnson - I would avoid it completely as it is packed full of 'itchies' - water is best but overbathing dries skin out too. I use Daniel Galvin Junior organic stuff or Jason products personally.

I think Waitrose have their own natural range which seems pretty natural - worth checking out.

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 18:29

Who are expensive? Green People? The products last for ages, Greeny, they are worth buying I promise

Havepassportwilltravel · 09/03/2007 18:31

sorry - stupid question - should have read thread title properly. Babies don't need fancy toiletries for the first few months - just water and cotton wool - that said, once baby is a bit older, Boots do a little range of organic bath products which are good and not wildly expensive.

octopussyintummy · 09/03/2007 18:31

Greensleves - I use washable baby wipes - but do have a sneaky pack of the Bambino Mio wipes which are fragrance free and biodegradable for emergencies!

octopussyintummy · 09/03/2007 18:33

For this bump I have bought Natalia massage oil and bottom butter as a treat - forgot to say that before!

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 18:35

The Boots Little Me range contains parabens I believe

sorry I can see my role on this thread is going to be that of irritating kill joy

Havepassportwilltravel · 09/03/2007 18:45

oops - well, if you want to avoid parabens it is going to cost a lttle more!

heymammy · 09/03/2007 19:00

Hi, I've just started using African Black Soap for dd1 & dd2 and its fab. Got it in liquid form and you only need to use the tiniest bit so it lasts for ages.

You can wash them from head to toe and it's made from only 3 ingredients: pure unrefined shea butter, coconut oil & palm kernel oil so no nasties at all!

In fact, I think it was Franny who mentioned it on another thread like this and I thought I'd give it a try so...thank you

I use a company called 'Spirit of Nature' their web address is

www.spiritofnature.co.uk

They are really reasonable in price and do everything from clothes to soaps, toys, nappies, even makeup, tampons, hair colour you name it! Have a look

twelveyeargap · 09/03/2007 20:32

Yay! Shopping. Was thinking I could even get some nice natural bum wipes and things now and save the "products" for later, iyswim.

I'm such a sucker for this stuff. Especially since I bought some Simply Herbs chickweed cream at a farmers' market recently and it cleared up my (mild) psoriasis within 2 weeks. Something no amount of steroid cream could do.

Made me realise how I'd prefer to have similarly made things for the new baby.

Neals Yard do a lovely baby range plus things for mums to be and new mums too, organic and no nasties/foaming agents etc. I loved using their Arnica/seaweed bath oil just after I had DS (when I managed to get in the bath for 10 mins...), very soothing and relaxing. Still use the baby balm on my DS, think its is really good quality.

TooTicky · 09/03/2007 21:01

Has anybody else found Green People products dry the skin? Or are my younger children and I ridiculously sensitive?

Oh, for pure fun, Tinti bath colour tablets are wonderful and are the only thing my ds2 can tolerate in a bath besides water.

octopussyintummy · 10/03/2007 15:15

I read in Junior Preg & Birth magazine that you should avoid aqueous cream on sensitive skin because it is an irritant - I though it was the opposite - my poor kids must have thought I wa torturing them! Any one know anything else about this?

MilaMae · 10/03/2007 20:11

Feel I've tried every green baby product under the sun so here are my findings. Always used Organic baby/Green People which we really liked but then had problems finding it. Tried Earth Friendly Baby(only green range I've find that give you bubbles with the bubble bath but there are several ingredients I don't like using. Currently using Beaming Baby which we love. They do good mail order with loyalty points. we use the whole range, the flushable wipes are brilliant. £2.99 but worth every penny in my book as they're lovely and natural with no perfume. Really useful as they just flush away when I empty the potty. Discovered Lavera chemical free baby sun spray last summer it was brilliant but can't remember where I got it from if anybody knows. If you find any other good brands let us know.

octopussyintummy · 10/03/2007 21:15

I used the Jason sun cream last year and it was great.

MilaMae · 12/03/2007 17:27

Where did you get the Jason cream Octopussy????

amidaiwish · 12/03/2007 18:08

i use the Earth Friendly Baby shampoo and bubble bath which isn't too expensive and is gorgeous
