Names for types of antique chair...

I'm idly looking (antique shops, junk shops, ebay etc) for a low upholstered chair with no arms and a high back for the new bedroom, but have no idea what they're called.

Have seem them referred to as nursing chairs , slipper chairs , bedroom chairs etc - but does this vary by style, shape, period etc?

It would really help my search if I knew what the thing was called... am sure someone on MN is a closet antiques guru...

MrsBadger · 08/03/2007 21:53

Spoon-backed ?

bit 'gentlemans club'...

and get re-upholstered

MrsBadger · 08/03/2007 21:58

or maybe a tub chair ?

Actually that site refers to all the right-shaped ones as 'nursing chairs' - maybe that'll do.

it's only the name I'm looking for at the mo - actual buying will come later...

my mum & granny (dad's mum) both have low, straightbacked, armless chairs ... both refered to as nurseing chairs (good position for bf apparently.. although tried it & frankly disagree!

skirmish · 08/03/2007 22:04

i hope you find one mrsb...knew someone that got one up in leicestershire somewhere...one of those quaint village type places, so perhaps you'll just have to do a lot of shopping

MrsBadger · 08/03/2007 22:05

or maybe a grandmother chair?

hmm, hadn't considered actually bfing in it... there's a thought.

do you have a baby to bf? or need one to justify the chair?

skirmish · 08/03/2007 22:18

retract that last message, as i'm sure i remember wittering on about linen trousers while pg on one of your threads

and, now that looks like i am stalking you!
{grin}

MrsBadger · 08/03/2007 22:24

due in Aug, no worries re stalking

actually the more I think about it the more sensible one I could bf in sounds.
will have to go and sit in lots and see how comfy they are.

OP posts:
skirmish · 08/03/2007 22:26

well congrats on the pg

they are really comfy...but, a lot of people say they aren't as they make you sit up very straight...you cannot slouch in one of these! and with regards to bf, i would still think you would need a pillow underneath bubs or you will end crouched over

MrsBadger · 09/03/2007 11:26

bump for the daytime antiques crowd...
