DD starting ballet, what shoes??

Please help, not sure where to put this. DD1 is four this month and I have signed her up for a trial ballet class. The lady said for her to wear something comfortable and any footwear apart from trainers. All she has at the moment is her winter boots from Clarks. Not exactly appropriate . So I need to buy her something but don't want to get ballet shoes in case she hates it. Any advice please??

I thought bare feet but apparently not . Thanks though, and I agree about not buying yet!

Socks with grippy soles good idea. Bare feet not great for ballet, as you slide your feet on the floor. Ballet shoes are quite cheap though and she could wear them for dressing up?

chocolatebirdy · 06/03/2007 21:12

plimsoles?

Lilliput · 06/03/2007 21:14

Have you looked on ebay for some second had ballet shoes? Won't cost the earth and then you've got them if she likes the classes and wants to carry on. I got all dd's ballet kit from ebay, there's quite a bit of stuff on there.

Ballet shoes leather or satin cost between £7 and £10 so perhaps cheaper then buying another pair of shoes just for that.

Skyler · 06/03/2007 21:35

Thanks ladies, there are loads on ebay and you are right about using them for dressing up as well. I think I will try to get a cheap second hand pair. As I am planning to buy something anyway I may as well get these. . They are cheaper than I expected.

No probs, just remember postage when buying from ebay, might not be much less than new.

Skyler · 06/03/2007 21:56

Yes true. I need to get her measured first. I understand you buy a size up as well???

Skribble · 06/03/2007 22:03

Usually one size up yes. if they are loose round about you can tighten them with the little cord.

Skribble · 06/03/2007 22:06

My DD's class is great we all pass on the shoes until they fall apart. Poor mum of the girl with the biggest feet has to buy them new and the one with the small feet gets them 10th hand .

Seriously though lots get passed about and always some on the for sale board and if we are lucky we can get a pair out of the long lost box. DD's present pair was from a mum who got handed two pairs from other mums she knows, managed to borrow sallopettes for DS through the dancing too, lot of networking .

Sounds great! Thank you. I hope she will enjoy it. The only bit I am bothered about is that I am not 'allowed' to stay and watch. She will be fine, but I want to see what she does

That is the norm for ballet classes, I found it strange at first, but DD was 5 when she started.

Our dance school has a cafe so we all sit and have coffes and cakes or go to the local bistro for hot chocolates. Good chance for a natter and 2 years on I have some good freinds.

Skyler · 06/03/2007 22:22

Yes. She is my PFB though and I am still practicing at this letting go malarky, and actually I am sure they all look really cute and I want to see lol.

my dd (almost 4) is starting ballet on friday. I am so excited (so is she i should add ).

i think the teacher said she has second hand stuff. hope i heard that right. all dd has are school shoes and winter boots.

although she is convinced she is wearing some shoes that came in a dressing up kit- deffo not suitable for proper ballet though bless her.

i found my old leotard and tutu from when I was 4, and it fits!!! bless... she is so keen to wear it. hope it's not too dated compared with all the other little girls' things lol. not that dd would care.
