small lightweight puschair suitable for underground?

Hi All

Was hoping for some advice on a small, lightweight pushchair easy enough to cart on and off trains and underground.

Ds is nearly 2.5 so maybe doesn't need lie-back. Am buying this initially for long day trip to London by train & tube - don't think he'll be able to stand/walk all day (will be a long day going round science/natural history museum from 9.15 am to 7 pm between arriving and leaving by train). Am wondering whether to just get one of the really cheap £15 Tesco or £20 Mothercare pushchairs that have no lie back and fixed wheels - they look to fold up smallest to be able to carry on and off underground. However, could probably do with carry strap as will have to carry bag of changing stuff etc. and hold ds's hand.

Is it worth paying £35 and getting something like the Mothercare jive which does have lie-back and swivel wheels and can buy a hood and raincover etc. - would be more flexible for future use. Looks like it wouldn't fold up as small to cary though and is 2 kg heavier.

What do other people think, would welcome opinions?

check o nebay for maclaren volo, the older ones with no hood/raincover are very cheap, and also some asda stores are doing them for £25

2nd hand citilite/city sport much bigger basket for shoving stuff in or a volo or silvercross pop

Bought one of the £15 mothercare ones to take on a plane when DS1 was tiny, and have used it a lot, because it it so lightweight and easy to carry on public transport. But it is uncomfortable to sit in, hard to push and I have always regretted not buying something with a few more features.

I'm not too keen on the citilite - if it's the one I'm thinking of it doesn't umbrella fold, although I know it's very light. Can't imagine lugging it up and down stairs and through ticket machines on the underground while still managing to keep hold of toddler etc.

I have looked at the Volo before, but just thought it was rather expensive and maybe not really so much smaller than my current Maclaren (think it's a Vogue -has bigger wheels than the Volo and it's heavy, the umbrella fold doesn't work very well so that it ends up taking up quite a bit of room in my car boot and has no carry handle).

Does the volo have a carry handle? I'll certainly look in Asda because £25 sounds like a good price.

Thanks

Ok - so the £15 Mothercare one would be good for the tube, but maybe not good for much else by the sounds of it?

the volo has a carry strap that attaches to the back near the brake and loops over the handles so you can sling it on you yr back. Volo is very light especially if you strip it to bare minimum ie no hood or seat liner etc.

Volo sounds good, but just did a quick search on the internet and couldn't see anything cheaper than £50, which is too much to pay for a new puschair, when ds will not be using it much longer.

I've got an old maclaren day tripper quite knackered FFP if you want it

TheBlonde · 01/03/2007 18:32

2nd hand Volo or Triumph would probably be best

Distracted · 01/03/2007 18:33

What's a Maclaren Daytripper - is that similar size to volo? If so, I would be interested - what do you mean by 'quite knackered', and what would you want for it?

Day tripper is the thing before quest and the like - you can have it for postage about £7 I should think inc paypal fees. They have swivel wheels, a slight relcline feature, straight handles. The wheels are ok but the side are a bit slack and the handles look like they have bits picked off the rubbery stuff. Where do you live can you look on ebay for something close to you so no postage chaarge - a quest should do the job too they have the carry straps as well I think.

That sounds good (sorry had to go & bath kids and then didn't get back to my pc again). Do you want to work out exactly what the postage would cost - make sure you're covering it and get in touch with me directly? My email is [email protected].

Am going to have a quick look in local baby shop - would really like one with a carry handle, but probably don't get that on the £15-£20 ones...
