Does your tumble drier shrink your clothes?

I dont think I'll be able to get through this coming winter without one but in the past I always found they would shrink my clothes. Are modern ones any better? ANy particular brand recommendations?

I find I have to be very careful with anything made of cotton jersey like T shirts and trackie bottoms - I have shrunk countless t shirts in my dryer! So yes, they do shrink some clothes IME. (I've got a hotpoint)

Yes mine are all shrunk!

Maybe better if you use a warm, not hot setting?

Dh's t shirts always seem to shrink, but mine don't.

yeah, I used to be blase about the laundry info on clothes labels, but have learned from bitter experience that it's definitely worth checking out whether a garment is tumble dryable!

I have a Bosch condenser one as I couldn't plumb it in.
It's good but will shrink some things.
I now dry everything to a "cupboard dry" setting which is slightly damp still - makes ironing easier too. This seems to work for most things but I don't put jeans as it seems to make them shorter.

i've found with my tumble dryer that if you just do them a little at a time then put it back on for more if need be then nothing seems to shrink.

The first few washes of any new clothes don't get tumble dryed. Only after they have been washed a few times do they get 'promoted' to tumble drying and I've found this does help with the shrinking issue.

Lou33 - My DH's T-shirts always shrink and mine don't. I thought it was because he was putting on weight!

The only experience I have of things shrinking in the tumble dryer is when I inadvertedly included 2 of dh's thermal vests and 3 pairs of his thermal socks - when they came out they were the right size for dd (age 3) and as stiff as a board! I was not popular ...

I buy childrens t shirts etc one size bigger, tumble dry them to fit. They only seem to shrink the first time.

Fio2 · 23/06/2004 09:30

OK who is brave enough to put their 'own' jeans in the tumble dryer

mummysurfer · 23/06/2004 09:45

i put everyhting in
if it shrinks and the label says it can be tumble dried i take it back and get a refund.
as someone has already said they only seem to shrink the first time. so you can either buy it agian in a bigger size or buy something else.

I find that any heated drying (hanging on radiators etc) shortens the life of elastic and makes it go 'wizzled'.

I have always been suspicious of tumble dryers and now I know why!
