This is a genuine thread, so no adverts please! I am looking to buy a used car, but not more than a year old, expecting to spend £18k - £24k. Needs to carry driver plus 3 tall teens in comfort. And not be enormous as big cars are awkward to park Confused. Is anyone delighted with their car and wd like to recommend the make and model?

We've just bought a new car and it was a toss up between the Mercedes B class and the BMW active router.

A class Mercedes is no good for 3 teenage kids, don't even bother my DH sat in the back and couldn't even look out of be window because his head was taller than it. B class was better and nicer but in the end we bought a BMW active tourer in the end. It's lovely!!! I love it. It's roomy, tall, but not too big. And nice an nippy without feeling too powerful (if that makes sense?).

TobyZiegler · 30/11/2016 14:27

Active tourer! Not active router.

OldTownNew · 30/11/2016 14:33

I've got a Mercedes c class, I LOVE it! Lots of space and it's so comfy, and lovely to drive

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 30/11/2016 14:40

I love the drive of our 3 series BMW. Get v good mpg as opted for diesel :) only thing is boot is small for pram and shopping etc. but this wouldn't be a problem for you!

Farfromtheusual · 30/11/2016 14:42

I have the new Peugeot 308 and I love it!!

I know peugeots were at one time, notoriously shit, but I can honestly say this is the best car I've ever owned. Nothing like the older models and so much better looking!

The boot is big, plenty of leg room in the back, front and rear parking sensors! Can't remember how much it was brand new, maybe 22k? But I got 3 years free insurance and all servicing etc is included in the single monthly payment!

If you wanted something a bit bigger but not huge then the new 2008 is nice too!

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 30/11/2016 14:56

We love our Grand C-Max. Nice drive, lots of toys, not too big, seats 4 comfortably, 7 at a pinch with the 2 pop up seats in the back.

It's not perfect, but honestly it's more than good enough for us. A bit more boot space and a bit more head room in the back would be nice, but would probably require a bigger car (S-Max?). The 1.6 petrol we have could have better fuel consumption and more power, but it uses less petrol than the Octavia vRS it replaced.

Doje · 30/11/2016 14:59

Ford Focus. Boring, but I'd get another one when I'm next in the market for a car.

BobbieDog · 30/11/2016 15:09

This is not what you are looking for but i absolutley love everything about my Kia Sportage Kx4.

It has everything that you could ever want. It very recently went for repair and i did not realise what i had until it was gone and I ended up with a vauxhall insignia and a corsa courtesy car.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 30/11/2016 15:11

Another one to say VW Touran. I had one as a courtesy car a couple of weeks ago when my Transporter was in for service. I took 15yr old ds and 3 of his rugby mates to a match, so that's 3 hulking great teens across the back. They had plenty of space and actually all commented on being presently surprised at how roomy and comfortable it was.

I also 2nd the Passat. We had one a few years back as our spare car, I absolutely loved it..... in fact I regret selling it to my friend and will be getting another when current spare car is up for renewal.

MakeItStopNeville · 30/11/2016 15:11

I have the new Mini Clubman. Fits 3 teens and all their stuff in happily plus it is so much fun to whiz around in.

dotdash · 30/11/2016 15:14

I've got a Ford Kuga. Loads of leg room, front and back. It's diesel and very economical.

We had Focus estate before this, but I much prefer the Kuga. I love it!

CakeUpWall · 30/11/2016 15:16

I've got the same problem as you, OP; need a car to fit me, DH, 3 adult-sized DC + dog at times.

I think I've settled on the BMW Gran Tourer. It's built on a Mini chassis, so not too huge, but is a 7-seater. My thinking is that when we all go out together, which isn't very often, then 1 DC can sit in the very back, so we don't have to use the silly middle seat.

I've had a Touran for many years. I love it and would recommend it in a heartbeat. It's done everything we've ever asked of it without complaining. I just fancy something a bit, erm, sexier?

Agiraffeisnotacat · 30/11/2016 15:23

We went from a grand scenic to a Mondeo earlier this year as we figured we didn't often use the extra seats but DC were getting taller and needed legroom. The mondeo is one of the best for rear legroom hence often being used for taxis.

We paid £18k for a six month old 2.0l diesel titanium with parking sensors and camera from motorpoint. It is a bugger to park or would be without the sensors. It will in theory park itself and we have done that a few times but generally I park myself as I hate being out of full control! It is easy enough to park with the sensors though.

Definitely a great car for us and well worth a look. The new ones look nicer than the old pre 2015 style too.

ShyTallSun · 30/11/2016 17:08

Another vote for BMW 3 series. The estate has good leg room I'm the rear and boot is good. Drives lovely and can pick up a good spec for your budget.

HandbagCrab · 30/11/2016 17:13

Mercedes b class. Can get top of the range nearly new for your budget. Plenty of room and practically drives itself. We've had ours about 3 months and it's amazing!

DXBMermaid · 30/11/2016 17:25

Volvo xc60 love it!!!
Not as massive as the xc90, but lots of room for teens and a big boot.

Really comfy, looks great, safe, sturdy.

Happyoutlook · 30/11/2016 17:29

Ford Expedition, it's the perfect car for us, loads of space for people and cargo it's 4x4 as well which really helps in the winter. My favorite feature is the remote start. I can start the car 5 mins before I go out so it's already warm and defrosted when it's time to go

Palomb · 30/11/2016 17:32

Skoda yeti - best car I've ever had 👍🏼

BikeRunSki · 30/11/2016 17:57

I really wanted a Yeti last time, but the boot was the wrong shape for the stuff I cart around for work.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 30/11/2016 18:02

Toyota Verso. Love it. 5 to 7 seater.

SVJAA · 30/11/2016 18:22

Another vote for the Mondeo, ours is a 15 plate and it's really spacious inside, and has lots of lovely toys (important to DP he loves technology) that you just don't seem to get in similar models in the same price bracket.

AliceMum09 · 02/12/2016 21:35

Peugeot 5008 - we just paid £15,689 for one that was 4 months old with 3,000 miles on the clock. Diesel, top spec with panoramic roof, parking camera, sensors that tell you whether a space at the side of the road is long enough to parallel park in, stop/start engine. I love this car, the one we got rid of was also a 5008, 11 plate and never given us any trouble (I just fancied an update!)

JoJoSM2 · 17/12/2016 09:18

I've been test driving a lot of cars recently.... Headroom in the back can be a bit of an issue, especially in Jags, BMW and the like if you've got teen boys who are 6ft +. I think Toyota Verso has better space for more passengers and the Merc B class looks like it might work (although I haven't sat in one before).
