Yes or no?

We are moving house and need a fridge/freezer, have been looking at american ones and wonder if they are worth the money and are they any good?

TIA

We have a Samsung one and love it.

bobsmum · 14/02/2007 16:41

WE looked a these and decided against them after having a look at the storage. A lot of it is taken up by gizmos and gadgets.

Instead we went for a side-by-side option; full size fridge and full size freezer designed to sit side by side. Now we have a huuuuuge amount of space and a fab large fridge. Cost a little more than an average American one, but we live in the sticks and really neede the space.

Ours is Liebherr and very lovely

MrsGoranVisnjic · 14/02/2007 16:44

yes oh god yes .. I love mine .. also have the Samsung one with water and ice dispenser

PrettyCandles · 14/02/2007 16:48

The side-by-side ones have a very narrow freezer, which can be tricky depending on how you use it. Eg, if you like to freeze trays of loose stuff, or large cakes, casseroles etc it can be inconvenient. Other than that, as long as you choose your gadgets with care, they're great.

I dream of having an American-style extra wide fridge on top of an extra-wide freezer...or a utility room with a full-size freezer and a larder fridge in the kitchen.

WinniethePooh · 14/02/2007 16:50

We have this one

The water and ice dispenser is fab and we can't imagine how we would manage without it now.

There is loads of room in both the fridge and freezer and we think it was our best purchase when we were sorting out the kitchen fot our new house.

twelveyeargap · 14/02/2007 17:09

Another vote for the Samsung. Just had it installed. Unfortunately not in Comet sale any more! I think we got ours for £599.

Freezer is indeed narrow, but if you freeze in bags or rectangular trays/ boxes then it's easy to stack.

We don't buy many convenience foods to feeze and I'm not, as a rule, organised enough to freeze loads of meals.

If you're used to having a humongous freezer then you might struggle. I think it holds at least as much as a three drawer "regular" freezer.

bobsmum · 14/02/2007 17:09

PC our sbs feezer has a loose items freezing tray for berries etc and the drawers are removeable for bigger items. We freeze our milk in 6 litre bottles because of where we live and we had to take a drawer out for that. Otherwise it's so much better than the chest freezer we had previously.

I didn't want to sacrifice fridge space for an ice maker or dispenser, but I can see if you lived next door to Tesco then storage wouldn't be such an issue

bobsmum · 14/02/2007 17:10

Oops now I see you meant american sbs freezers and not my separates.

paulaplumpbottom · 14/02/2007 17:57

I have one in my kitchen and one in my scullery and I love them both. They don't tend to be very attractive though. In my next kitchen I'm going to put something gorgeous like a Smeg in the kitchen and leave the mammoths to the scullery

HEIFER · 14/02/2007 18:10

I got a Samsung one - and LOVE IT....

got this one

Couldn't/wouldn't be without it now...

Agree re fridge width - not great - but enough space, just not very wide....

But still love it...

is it true that if you get one with a drinks dispenser then you have to have it plumbed in?

If so, then i dont think we can get one cos there is no room near the water pipes in the new house.

You can get them with drink reservoir that you have to fill from the tap. We have one, only because the nearest equivalent model without the drink reservoir was actually smaller, but took the rervoir out after the first summer. Only ever used it because I was pg and desperate for icy drinks. Even the one we have now, which is plumbed in, and came with the house, we only use the dispenser for ice, never to drink the water. If you don't use the water frequently it stagnates and niffs.

MrsGoranVisnjic · 14/02/2007 19:31

plumbed in involved putting a pipe from existing supply round to back of fridge .. costs about £25 for a plumber to do it .. they run it behind cabinets / under fitted cupboards .. its really no hassle

the thing they don't tell you though is they have a filter that needs changing every 2 years (well its timed to go off every 6 months but engineer told me 18 months to 2 years would be fine) .. they cost about £30 - £60 each

I loathe these things with a passion. I just cant see why anyone would wish to make a feature of an electrical appliance. My friends have one which was love at first sight, now they view it as a hunking great eyesore taking up vast amounts of space. I vote for integrated white goods every time. If you are serious about buying one then you should measure out how much space they take up as they are vast not to mention ugly.

MrsGoranVisnjic · 14/02/2007 19:48

mine's gorgeous and I built a special cupboard around it

I stroke it daily
