Bumbo seat - are they safe?

I've just bought a Bumbo baby seat and want to know if anyone's baby has managed to get out of it. My dd2 is 5 mths, when she gets fed up with being in the chair she arches her back and it looks like she could almost jemmy herself out of it. I've read of older babies being able to get out by putting one hand on the floor and lifting themselves, she's no-where near that stage but I'm wondering if it's safe to leave her alone in it for a minute or two or if she could actually push herself out. (Ok, I know we're not supposed to leave them alone but...)

my ds did the same thing - I didn't risk leaving him in it and as he didn't seem to like it anyway I ended up giving the bumbo away

Ds1 arched his back and got out of it at 4 months old. He sort of fell forward and thumped his head on a granite floor. Huge bruise. I shudder when I see a bumbo now I'm afraid.

I found it fine but for a very short period - a couple of months tops - after that, he could definitly get himself out of it by rolling.

Howvere, we did go back to it a few months later when he was safe getting himself out of it and he really enjoyed sitting in it again!

Thanks all, she's only happy in it for a few minutes but I think i'll hang on to it as it does give us an extra place to put her and beat the boredom factor, but i won't leave her alone. Her 3.4 yo sister tried sitting in it so maybe she'll like it too when she's older and can get in and out herself.
Anyone else want to comment?

I'm taking my sister's back to her today. Has been great for ds2 since Christmas, but now that he's 6mths I don't trust it at all. He's happy enough in his high chair instead, and I'm much happier that he's safe in that.

It has been very helpful for feeding him, but not really much more than that.

malaleche - i had one and my DS never came out of it, although i know others that did have DC come out. I wouldnt leave your DD in it, just in case... but just a quick tip - if you want to sell it - stick it on ebay - i got £20 for mine (and i bought it off ebay too - for £16 ) - if you still have the box - this helps!

Bought one when ds was about 4 months as a friend told me it helped her ds to sit. I found that ds straightened his legs, arched his back and I too was worried he'd get himself out of it. He never looked that happy in it really so I haven't used it for ages, I tend to sit him on the floor surrounded by cushions or in his high chair.

Thanks all - I've only just bought it on Spanish ebay at great trouble (took me two weeks and hours of searchng on 2nd hand websites)for 35 Euros inc. postage. You don't know how lucky you uk dwellers are with ebay and charity shops. There were 200+ bumbos on uk ebay and exactly one on the spanish site. (And can you believe it - not ONE childrens' book . The postage from UK to Spain is double...
Sorry for rant but I miss charity shops..

Depends on child. My dd got out of hers so I couldnt use it.

NannyL · 14/02/2007 21:47

NO they are not safe IMO .. i know of SEVERAL babies (who couldnt sit unaided and no way move themselves) who have fallen out forwards in them. (they sort of fall out headfirst and land head first on the floor)

(unfortunatley 1 was on a table at the time and landed head first on the floor... courtesy fo daddy getting big sis a drink at that moment)

I dont trust one and would NEVER EVER use one, or at least never ever leave a child in one for a seconds, whoch sort of defies the point!
