I think they've got to be 9kg to go up to the next size ... we're waiting for our 6 mth old to put on about another lb so as I can move him out of the M&P seat which I also hate!! Maybe someone else will know of one which your DS can move into now.

musica · 14/06/2004 22:34

I think they also need to be able to hold their heads really securely which is why they suggest 9 months. There are some which will go from birth to 4, which might be a better option at this stage - Mothercare and kiddicare have some. I'd be really wary about getting a forward facing one at this age.

ok, if u want one u can keep in the car, and u are fine with taking out of the car seat, then get a 2 stage one. as long as you have it backwards facing it will be fine. mothercare do a nice range of their own two stage seats, and the britax range is also good. but these seats are not really easy to move between cars.

maisystar · 14/06/2004 22:59

i had a klippan 1st stage car seat for ds. it was really roomy and easily fitted him till he was 9 months and he was a big baby!

brutax freeway is good quality and comfy but not too dear. like most stake 2 seats it can only be used from 9kg (i think usually 9mths). both ds and then dd were big enough to use it at 6mths.

the britax eclipse is an even better version of the above. its suitable from birth to 4yrs. its a bit more expensive though.

Halfords do both (found them to be the cheapest) and staff are trained and will fit it in your car properly if you want them to. you can also get britax in most baby shops.

I agree with Musica , my concern would be to buy one which can remain rearward facing for another few months yet and then turn round. He may be big but facing forwards may yet prove a problem in the unfortunate event of a crash due to immaturity of his neck muscles and upper body strength. Perhaps look at the Britax Club or similar, which a couple of friends with larger babies used successfully for a few years after their babies rapidly outgrew the Infant Carrier.

we have always used 2 stage car seats. with dd1 we purchased a mothercare one (in farm print) and had it backwards facing till she was the right weight to go forward facing. dd2 had a britax club class extra, which was pricier but very nice. we still have the mothercare one which dd2 is using atm, as the britax was in the car at the accident so we dumped it.

gloworm · 15/06/2004 07:54

oops, when i said eclipse, i meant to say britax club class extra!!!

busybee123 · 15/06/2004 07:56

i have this problem too. i went to halfords at the weekend to buy a britax first class si that goes rearwards and then forwards when baby is old enough....it was terrible....wobbled all over the place....the bloke who fitted it reckoned it was the best car he had fitted it in so far though!! i dread to think what the others were like!! He also said that in the 30+ fittings he had done with that car seat, he had never had a sale, purely cos there was too much movement. I am at a loss and don't know what to do. DS is also getting too big for the 0+ car seat he is in and he is a mere 18 weeks!! I never had this trouble with my other 2!! I know he is way too small for a forward facing one and would never dream of putting him in one, but he is getting to the point where his head is getting to the top of the car seat which is extremely dangerous. Short of never going anywhere in the car for the next 6 months, I don't know what I can do!!

Clayhead · 15/06/2004 07:59

We have a Britax FIrst CLass and it's great!

busybee123 · 15/06/2004 08:01

really clayhead? what car have you got if you dont mind me asking? i cant believe how much movement there was when we tried it

Kittypickle · 15/06/2004 08:34

I went through this recently. Once the shoulder straps are well down below the babies shoulder and their head is at the top of the seat they have grown out of their Infant carrier even if they aren't too heavy for it, or so I was told. Britax are adamant that babies shouldn't go front facing until they are 9kg AND can sit unsupported for half an hour. I ended up with the Britax First Class in desperation as it was the only one that anyone could get to fit(not brilliantly) in the back of our car - I even tried a Nordic Britax that they make for the Swedish market which wouldn't fit. I think the Bebe Confort Iseos is supposed to be pretty good but unfortunetly it wouldn't fit in our car. If anyone want to borrow a First Class, it is sitting next to the front door and has been for a couple of months !

Hulababy · 15/06/2004 08:49

My PILs have a Bebe Confort Iseos (sp???) which can be used both forward and rear facing. It is very roomy and can be widened (or narrowed) where necessary, and be reclined. It is suitable from birth. It isn't cheap (are many?) but seems a great choice. It will easily last until DD is 4 at the earliest - Maisystar's 3.5yo Ds used it recently and he had loads of room in it.
