Anyone heard of SPACE kitchens???

And if so, what do you think? do you know anyone that has had one installed and what did they think? We are desperate for our kitchen to be finished (half my units are in my hall, and I have a sink, and cooker, thats it! its total chaos in my house!)

SPACE cold called a week or so back, came round, did the hard sell, stayed over 4.5 hours (yes, gone 00:45 on a Sunday - told him I had to be up by 6am, fell on deaf ears) only then to be told that what we wanted came to £5.5k and they couldnt meet out budget of £4k - and let me tell you, our kitchen is T I N Y, so if they cant do me a decent fitting for that, then....

anyway, let me know lovely people, please

My instinct would be to say don't touch them with a bargepole.... I have heard that these companies that call to your house decide how much they want to make from you before they walk through the front door, I'm always suspicious when they are not upfront with a price list for their units.

Have you tried MFI, Wickes, etc? Wickes will do a plane, come to your house, etc and there is no hard sell (not that I know of anyway). They have some nice designs at the moment.

We are going to get our units from Ikea (the cheapest I have found so far) and get our builder to fit them.

I think the fitting is quite expensive in my area - I am expecting it to be at least £1k

plan not plane!

anyone else?

well - know nothing about them as a company except they have called me six or seven times and will not tell me where they got my number from. One of their call agents told me that it was from "my postcode" which makes no sense (I'm not even listed in the directory) and wanted to give me another number to call to get taken off their list which I thought was extremely cheeky. So basically my instinct here would be to steer well clear.

A friend had a bad experience with them (hello if you're reading this!) - they send out a completely untrained dolt to measure up, he had no clue and wasted everyone's evening. They must be the Zenith of the kitchen world

Wolfgirl · 10/02/2007 16:40

Oh nooooooooo!!! that sounds terrible. And to boot I have a colleague at work who is having one installed by them at the end of Feb and she has paid for the units up front. I really hope she doesnt get shafted.

Id still like to hear from anyone else who knows anything about these people. My gut instinct isnt good, but am so desperate to get this house sorted

thanks ladies xx

we had a B & Q kitchen and they fitted it for less than 5.5k and our kitchen isn't tiny. I'd steer clear of coldcallers and go to somewhere like B&Q, Homebase, Wickes, Ikea etc. they all do free kitchen plans and have a wide range to suit all budgets. People just willy nilly knocking on doors don't tend to have good reputations.

Furball · 10/02/2007 16:45

that price included flooring, rearranging the plumbing and also re-plastering the walls

Wolfgirl · 10/02/2007 16:48

Hi Furball, Dh is steering clear of B&Q cos he thinks their stuff is not a good standard; if I could convince him that other people are recommending their gear, then we might be able to do something with them. We found excellent doors etc in Travis Perkins, but they dont fit or do plans and this has been dragging on for far too long. I think Im quite happy with what Ive seen at B&Q tbh, but trying to convince his lordship

thanks for responding.xx

We went for solid oak doors they were the most expensive of the standard range and if you get them in the sale they are obviosly cheaper. The grain on them is gorgous. They cater for all budgets but we found the Select range to be not worth the extra but deffo the quality of our doors is very good.

We ran out of money after doing lots of work to our house and had to put in B&Q kitchen units as we couldn't afford Magnet or similar. We had MDF doors made and fitted but only because I couldn't find the flat fronted, plain style I wanted at B&Q at the time. The units were v reasonable and have lasted really well so far - 3 years plus. I would def avoid the company you mention, any good kitchen company does not need to do such a hard sell and they sound disctinctly dodgy! You can always improve the overall look of your new kitchen by spending more on the door handles and worktops. IKEA carcasses are pretty good too and lots of architects use them and then add MDF doors along with good worktops and handles. Good luck!

We bought a beautiful Ikea Beech kitchen and beech butcher block surfaces. This was for a large u shaped kitchen, the units themselves were just under 2k. With fitting and a new ceiling and floor it came to 4k (within your budget). It looked like a millionaire dollars and I miss it. The joiner we used said the quality of the kitchen units was fantastic and he would recommend them to anyone.

Wolfgirl · 13/02/2007 20:26

anyone else heard of them?
