Sony or Canon digital camera?

Paula71 · 10/06/2004 22:16

Having looked at the previous thread all those digital cameras are way out my budget. I have a maximum of £150 to spend, have been looking at the Canon A310 and Sony Cybershot DSC-P72.

Does anyone have any good or bad reviews on these? (The sites I have found are mostly American and are not helping me make my mind up, I don't have the cash to waste so don't want to screw up!) Or does anyone know of a good camera for under that price range?

(Just so you know, I am no David Bailey so am looking for mostly shots of ds twins and our days out, so some of the scenery!)

All help gratefully recieved!

They suggest you get a docking station ( rubbish ) all you need is rechargeable batteries.

Hi - we recently bought an Olympus Camedia digital camera (which incidently has been excellent but maybe slightly above your budget - cost 175 incl extras). I spent ages poring over reviews and found www.cameras.co.uk very useful for both reviews and price comparisons. HTH

Paula - both of those are supposed to be good cameras. I have a Canon (digital Ixus II) and love it - very easy to use and good results, so from a personal point of view I would always favour the Canon.

Probably your best bet though would be to go to a camera shop and hold the cameras, go through the features etc. You might find that what suits other people doesn't suit you and that physically holding it will help make up your mind (weight, balance etc makes a big difference I've found).

We have a Canon digital camera and are very happy with it (it's the Ixus). It's great quality and imprtantly for us, desn't use normal batteries. It has its own proper battery with recharer - much easier as digital cameras eat batteries!

Use a Sony DSC-P10 at work and its excellent..

The Sony is a "best buy" on the Which? site - they say "The Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 offers 3.2Mp and good picture quality. It gains top marks for its shutter delay ? just 0.4 seconds, and is one of the best digital cameras available for recording short videos with sound. The only slight disappointment is its focussing ability, which is just average."

I also have a buyers guide disk from "Total Digital Photography" which gave the Sony a score of 85% and said "performs well and offers an attractive option for first time users on a budget."

I'd recommend looking at Amazon, as I found it the cheapest when I bought my camera a few months ago.

My sony is brilliant! Go for a digital camera with a metal cased body not plastic. Worth the few extra ££ as much more robust!

just remembered, one annoying thing with the Sony is that the zoom can not be used on the video setting... otherwise near perfect!
