Its been a bit noisy recently and today when doing yet another load it started making a huge banging noise.. my dad thinks it could be the bearings, I hope he can fix it, coz I can't afford a new one.....

bloody hell!

Where do you live? I've got one going spare you can have if you want, its old but does work, just leaks a teeny bit at the front.

if your Dad can't fix it and you can collect from Cumbria, you can have it

You are near Welwyn aren't you? If you go in to John Lewis they will give you the name of a local chap who does all their repairs. I rang him up and he advised me over the phone. I did what he said and the problem was sorted! I can probably find the number somewhere if you want it.

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 14:37

Thanks Mamag but You are a bit far from me, thanks anyway.

this is the 3rd washing machine I have had in 8 years, surely they should last a bit longer.

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 14:39

actually thinking about I got my first new one (first ever washing machine was second hand) in 2000.

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 14:40

then replaces it in 2005 and now this one is on its way out too...

The salesman in JL told me they should last at least 5 years - I actually went to buy a new one and he gave me the number.

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 14:42

ok, will do that yoyo thanks.

silly thing is, I have it on spin atm, empty, just to see if I could work out where the banging was coming from (I thought that maybe a battery or something was banging inside the drum, but there is nothing caught up with clothes) and its a lot quieter than I have heard it from weeks.

OP posts:
orangina · 02/02/2007 15:00

your washing machine sounds just like mine.... makes a terrible clacking noise on the spin cycle, but still manages to wash etc ok. Will you let me know if it is the bearings, as I don't want to have to buy a new one now, and I prefer to call the mechanic with SOME idea of what is wrong.....
Oh, and if I could get all this done before baby #2 is born (due sunday), that would be marvellous (haha.....)

allmytimeonmumsnet · 02/02/2007 15:50

The other thing it could be is something in the filter. Has it got a removeable one? Even if its not obvious (unsually at the bottom at the front but sometimes behind a cover or underneath). Our last but one machine did this. Called engineer and he removed loads of coins and screws from the filters. I've been obsessive about pockets ever since. Some machines have easy access ones you can prevent this with but even the more tricky ones can be done once you know where the filter is.

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 15:53

I always check my filter, its an easy access one on the front. Filter is fine, hope its the bearings.

It is the bearings, but because its a plastic drum my dad can't fix it Have spoken to the DWP about getting a loan and am waiting for the form (on benifits, have 2 disabled children) but it will take about 6 weeks so my dad is lending me his spare one that doesn't wash very well, but its a washing machine. They have taken my washing home to wash it for me. Buggeraction!!!!!

Bite the bullet ................buy a Miele. Job done for the longest time.

Expensive to start with......but to quote my Dad, buy cheap buy twice.

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2007 23:04

HOw much are they LGJ?? I can;t find the price on their website

CocoLoco · 02/02/2007 23:40

You won't get much change out of £500 for a new Miele washing machine, but you could get one off Ebay for £100-200 and it would still probably be better than a new Hotpoint (for example). My Miele washing machine is a few years old and has never needed a repair, my MIL's is at least 15 years old and still going strong.

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 23:50

The bearings are going on mine as well! I have been advised to buy a bosch next time as they use metal bearings and all the others use plastic. Ebay for me though, can't afford to buy one of those from main shops

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 23:51

The really daft thing is that DH could fix it if we could get new bearings - but no. Nowhere. Not even from the manufacturer.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2007 00:03

what make is it, there is a stall on the indoor market in a neighbouring town, who can the bearing for most machines.
