anybody got a flashy Brabant(?) bin..just wondered if it's worth the money/any good.
My latest plastic effort has exhausted itself- the lid is knackered and it never seems to hold the amount of rubbish we go through.
Any recommendations?

Ps can you buy discounted Brabants anywhere.. 50/60 quid seesm rather steep for a Bin! (even if it does look nice)

advice please - I mean everyone has a bin don't they?

You can get stainless steel bins that aren't brabantia (sp?) but look similar - same shape and size. You can also get special bin bags to fit them but they are expensive too, but egular bags are a bugger to get out when it's full!

We've got an M&S Brabantia look-alike which we actually use as a nappy bin (the lid is pretty tight fitting so it keeps those nasty niffs in). On the whole I like it but I was a bit disappointed to notice recently that it's going a bit rusty. OK, so it's in a bathroom, but even so I was surpised as it's only 2.5 years old. I think it was a bit cheaper than the Brabantia ones but it wasn't dirt cheap. If you do go for one, I would definitely recommend the Brabantia liners though - nice and thick and with tie-handles.

Hulababy · 09/06/2004 17:16

We have the big, round stainless steel Brabantia bin, with the touch lid. It's great - holds load of rubbish, special bags don't show on outside so doesn't look untidy, and actual bin looks fine too and not at ll unsightly. As we have open plan livign area that was important to us. So I think that yes they are good and for us was worth the money. I know that they are expensive though.

We got ours from Argos. It was about £5 cheaper there than in Next. I also noticed that T J Hughes sells them too - haven't been and seen for how much but may well be even cheaper there.

The bin liners are great too. Cost abount £1.95 for 10 and available in places like John Lewis, Debenhams, TJ Hughes (again!) and some Sainsburys - few supermarkets seem to stock them! The bin bags are very thick and don't tend to tear at all.

Oh God, don't get a Brabantia one!!! I got my mum's old one. The lid was always twisting and having to be fixed - eventually I just took it off. The bags are a nightmare to get out and then they are half empty when you do manage. They fill up in about 2 days. I'm going to get a new bin tomorrow and I shall take so much pleasure in throwing this overpriced piece of crap onto the tip.

Hulababy · 09/06/2004 17:25

Really Tinker? We have had no problems at all with ours and it is in perfect condition - had it just over a year that's all. Bags are always used till chocker - cos we are too lazy to take them downstairs to the rubbish too often! And we find that our bags just slide right out no problems. Honest, not had a single problem with it and wouldn't buy any other make for our main bin again having use one.

We know a few people with various Brabantia bins where we live (and other Brabantia stuff as well) and everyone has seemed really pleased with theirs.

unicorn · 09/06/2004 20:44

So we're divided on this one then!
Let me know which bin you get Tinker... I am very interested (how sad am i?)

Ooh yes I love our Brabantia bin - soft touch lid like Hula, no the kids don't play with it (often). What I like about is that the lid stays open so you can chuck in your eggshells as you go when making a cake. (how sad is that?) Expensive but worth it. As Mrs Miniver says, it's the everyday essentials that need to be nice as if they are horrid it just grinds you down.

JosieP · 10/06/2004 01:49

We were given a Brabantia soft touch bin as a wedding present (hope they weren't hinting!) 2 years ago and LOVE it - can't seem to buy the correct bags over here (USA) but use regular ones and twist the excess bag around and tuck it down the side (those who have one will know what I mean!) so you can't see the bag. Definitely a posh bin, but lovely to use (especially good when peeling carrots for the endless babyfood - the lid stays open and can easily be opened with ones elbow/heel of knife if carrying things around).
Would highly recommend it.

unicorn · 10/06/2004 01:52

Does'nt the stainless steel get all grubby - with little paws all over it?
or maybe it's just my kids who seem fascinated by waste disposal systems?

JosieP · 10/06/2004 03:43

Yes, you're right - it is quite high maintenance....worth it to me, but I'm a bit aesthetically obsessed!!

I've got the soft top Brabantia stainless steel and I think it's great. I too just use ordinary binliners - I don't find it offensive to have a bit of bin liner poking out of the top!

mammya · 10/06/2004 23:11

Don't buy a cheaper imitation of a Brabantia, I've got a pedal one from B&Q and the pedal system broke very quickly.

unicorn · 10/06/2004 23:13

tinker- what did you get then?

OP posts:
Hulababy · 11/06/2004 08:52

unicorn - to keep my stainless steel looking shiny I simply wipe one of DD's wet wipes over it each day. That's it - wet wipes are fab , they seem to clean everything and anything in our house! Use an antibacterial one when I am cleaning kitchen properly (on bin, not DD obviously)

Tinker · 11/06/2004 09:59

unicorn - got (well, getting - my mum got it first to check it would fit) a simple, classic bin from IKEA. No gadgets, no frills, no nonsense. A simple bin.

Twinkie · 11/06/2004 10:10

50/60 is not steep for a brabantia - mine is beautiful and sooo handy and lovely - my friend has one the same and her soft touch mechanism has broken and it is sooooo annoying to touch the top and it not open - I think I would never be able to go back to a normal bin!! - will tell her about your experience Galaxy!!

Fio2 · 11/06/2004 10:18

I just use carrier bags and then put them outside into black bin bags. That way I never have to clean a bin and the kitchen doesnt get smelly.

I could never spend 60quid on a bin!

Sorry but have to add my twopennys worth. I bought a posh silver pedal bin, not soft touch but a pedal one. Cost 45 quid and I gave it to my neighbour after 6 months. As my DH is a lazy slob and used to push the rubbish in, it took scaffolding & a crane to get the rubbish out of the inner bin. Also they get very unshiny very quickly. So I reverted to a 6.99 plastic one from Asda (we go through tons of rubbish in our house). PS neighbour doesn't think much of it either and she is very much more the sort of person to polish it lots!

unicorn · 11/06/2004 12:48

Twinkie you sound like you're in love with yours!
The jury is still out on this one..and the rubbish is still overflowing!

OP posts:
Twinkie · 11/06/2004 12:53

Get the big soft tough one - it takes lots of rubbish and doesn't let too many yucky smells out - It is true I am in love with it!!

WIll get my friend to email them too - thanks Galaxy!!
