i won a baby sized bushbaby one in a mumsnet compettion and would have loved to have a toddler one as they are GREAT!!!

we have a VAUDE toddler one which we are very happy with......

but the bushbaby would have been my choice if cash had allowed"

I've got the kelty kids backcountry - it was very expensive but well worth it

kelty back carrier
it's one of the only one with proper frame support like a really good rucksack - important if you want to use it with a heavy toddler!

Piffleoffagus · 08/06/2004 21:23

Hmm we have a vango its great!
I'd choose the bushbaby over cosatto one from what I've seen..

i have a bushbaby and a babytrekker which is a very strong cotton lightweight carrier - no frame so less bulky than the bushbaby to it and you can carry up to 5 years. babytrekker

We've got a bushbaby - which has been great - I'd definately recommend it. It's done quite a few miles now, between 2 kids!

Really you could do with trying one on in a shop to see if it feels comfortable. We've got a Kelty one which isn't as comfortable for my dh to carry (I don't do the carrying now - ds too heavy!!) as the Kelty seems to have a bigger frame than the Bushbaby & my dh isn't particularly big, so the straps don't sit right on his shoulders. I know that he definately prefers to use the Bushbaby.

Like popsycal we have a Vaude one, complete with rain cover/sun canopy but probably would have gone for the bushbaby one if we had had the cash!! The Vaude Jolly is pretty good with lots of padding and the back can be let out so that they can sleep, although the heavier they are the harder it can be to carry them in this position as it alters the whole centre of mass/gravity thing! If it helps, everyone who I know who has the Karrimor frame one wishes that they hadn't, although I have no direct experience with it. Good luck and happy walking!

We've got a Kelty one, similar to katierocket's but I think it may be an earlier model. Cost was around £170. My dh gets on very well with it but I always found it a struggle (but I am very small and even though it has an adjustable back I could never get the fit right). Definitely try as many as you can to find a comfortable one. We've used ours loads so it was definitely worth spending quite a bit to get a good one.

Thanks for advice.
Pops- The bush baby on Kiddicare is a 'lite' though not the more expensive 'premier' model. As good?
Poppy- thanks for telling me about Karrimor, they are all over Ebay.
Shrub- if there is no frame will they be supported when you take it on/off on your own? Do you have to squat down and then summon all the strength in your legs to stand up?
I don't want to spend a fortune & know I will be the one who ends up wearing it so I have to take this into consideration.
Ginger- Thanks, think I will have to go & try some out

coj - re: babytrekker you just sit down to take them off and gently lower ds down onto the ground and vice versa to put them on. the babytrekker feels more secure as ds is sort of wrapped around my body. with the bushbaby they sit very high up in the frame and i have found it tends to swing sideways as it becomes top heavy which leads to my ds2 banging his head if there is anything near by. this may be because i'm vertically challanged and ds2 is a very large, heavy baby

popsycal · 09/06/2004 20:02

pssst - the mumsnet compettion this week is for a bush baby carrier (but don't tell anyone as it has my name on it....

Ouisie · 09/06/2004 20:22

We got a bushbaby but haven't really got into using it yet - DD is now way too heavy for the baby bjorn and won't go in the pushchair so I guess I'll have to get used to it. Does anyone know how to adjust it properly?

meandthomas · 09/06/2004 23:03

we have a vaude swing and love it

I love my Bushbaby (see threads passim as they say in Private eye). Used it for DS1 until he was nearly 3, ditto DD, now DS2 has it (he's 14mo). Did in fact carry DS1 once at 3.5 but it was a struggle . It's really comfy and easy to put on and off. Mine is the old one ie it has now become the lite and luxury one (mine was in between i guess) so not sure if it's worth the extra money for the luxury version. Used most when we had just DS1 and worth its purchase price for his first beach holiday alone (ever tried a Maclaren pushchair on the beach?)
