Thinking of moving dd2 to a booster seat - is it worth getting a high back one and do the backs recline if her seat does?

They seem awfully expensive

I need to move dd3 into a second stage car seat and cannot bear to shell out for another one - really want to move dd2 onto a booster and give dd3 her car seat

they didnt have high-backed booster seats last time I was looking - are they really much safer?

i got a high backed booster seat for dd (18 months) , which converts to an ordinary booster.....was £30 or so from Argos

lulumama · 29/01/2007 13:14

sorry ... a second stage car seat that converts to a booster ...

Enid · 29/01/2007 13:15

dd2 is 4 (and high back -averse)

i see....is she not ready for just a simple booster? i'm think that is compliant with the new laws.....

serenity · 29/01/2007 13:17

We're about to do this with DD, and I've been umming and ahhing too. DD often sits in DS2s booster when he's in school, but I still think I'll get her one with a (detachable) back. Argos do a Graco one for £35 which looks pretty good (lots of M&B gold awards etc)

lulumama · 29/01/2007 13:18

car seat rules....4 year old can go in a booster...

serenity · 29/01/2007 13:18

ahh crossposted, DD is only 3 (but only a tad off of 18kg) which is why I'm considering the backed one. At 4 I'd probably just go for an ordinary booster.

serenity · 29/01/2007 13:21

That isn't UK rules btw - it's british colombia and is slacker than UK laws, hang on let me find ours

serenity · 29/01/2007 13:24

this link tells you about when to use each seat.

lulumama · 29/01/2007 13:33

sorry ! just skim read the link off google

It should be a high back from 15kgs at least until she is about 6 / 22kgs. It offers more side impact protection and support. Some have a slight recline such as Maxi Cosi Rodi XP (I think) but if you are worried about her sleeping the high back and head rest would give some support anyway. You can get a Britax Hiliner for around £40 or less.

NannyL · 29/01/2007 13:49

dont get the graco junior one

its crap in the safesty tests and simply doesnt offer the required protection in a crash

the britax highliner and maxi cosi rodi on the other hadn do offer good protection

serenity · 29/01/2007 14:12

Just checked, and Argos has reduced the Britax one so it's actually cheaper than the Graco now

Britax HiLiner

Enid · 29/01/2007 15:24

can you take the back off the britax

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 29/01/2007 15:26

we can take the back off our britax one (but it's quite old so I'm not sure it's exactly the same)

both dd (6) and ds (5) are in high back boosters. I've tried dd in a normal booster but she wriggles so much that she actually slides off the seat. So I would say, if your dd is a wriggler, the high back booster would be better because it keeps them in one place.

Enid · 29/01/2007 15:28

the booster slides out from underneath dd1

I like to recline dd2's seat on long journeys so if I could take the back off I could still do that

our britax high back booster (think it is britax kid?) reclines - it's not by very much though, just something at the back that you pull out that makes it lie down a bit more than upright (iyswim)

SmileysPeople · 29/01/2007 15:40

We swapped the basic booster for a highbacked one as we discovered that for long journeys it provides support for thier head whilst sleeping.

Sleeping with a booster, looks very uncomfortable and dangerous.

For short journeys though we will still use the booster sometimes(we seem to be swapping then around cars constantly these days)

Twiglett · 29/01/2007 15:48

maxi cosi rodi was the best safety one when I was looking for DS .. but that was a couple of years ago

and the high back would lie back if the car seat does because it isn't fixed to the booster its an additional bit you clip in ..

Twiglett · 29/01/2007 15:48

oh the booster bit has a plastic thing that slides between car seat and car back so anchors it in in place on the rodi

NannyL · 29/01/2007 16:50

enid you cant take the backoff the broitax highliner...
howvere you can use with the back attached) until 36kg so your 10 year old gets extra side impact protection
