Blackout blinds - any recommendations apart from John Lewis?

We have a very wide window (206cm) and John Lewis don't stock blackout blinds that wide. Does anyone have any recommendations for other suppliers?

I've found hundreds on the internet, but no idea how reliable they are.

Ikea - not too expensive. Do very large window sizes. Hope there's one near you!

I had a white blackout blind for my son's bedroom. Worked wonders.

oh it's a nihtmare when you have huge windows isn't it. at our las house ds's window as 225cm wide. we had to get hillarys in to make one to measure. it cost >£500 to get two windows donw and they still weren't great - light seeped in around the edges

there is the option of cutting two down to each cover half of the window i suppose?

MrsBadger · 25/01/2007 09:11

the widest one Ikea do is 200cm, which might just do it - do you have 206cm of glass or does the 206cm include the frame?

MrsBadger · 25/01/2007 09:12

oh yes, if you have several panes (like this get two (or three, or four) narrower ones

We've got three wide windows in our extension and got custom-sized blackout blinds via Ebay with Knighton Blinds. I can't see the exact blinds in their shop at the momemnt but I'm sure they'll be able to help.

Checking my records, it cost us £114 total for 3 blinds, all three being well over 2m wide.

Argos do blackout blinds & curtains, not sure on sizes but I know they do them.

Rosieglow · 26/01/2007 16:39

John lewis also do blackout lining - Could you line your curtains rather than have blinds?

TuttiFrutti · 26/01/2007 16:58

Thanks everyone. No Mrs Badger, we have 206cm of glass, so a 200cm blind wouldn't fit.

Rosieglow - I spent 2 evenings last week sewing blackout linings to our curtains, but unfortunately the curtains are on poles so they let in light at the top and round the sides.

Will investigate Knightons Blinds and Ebay to see what I can find. Can't face a trip to Ikea, it's an hour and a half's journey from us and I'm due to have a baby in 2 weeks time!

I got ours from Knighton Blinds on ebay too and they were fantastic. Our windows were 213cm wide, they made them to fit exactly, and you can have the drawstring on either end as well. I think they cost about £60 including P&P.

maud · 29/01/2007 14:51

Just to add, easyblinds doing just the blackout material now as well as velcro kits and sell v. wide material. might be worth checking out

FrayedKnot · 29/01/2007 14:54

I had to get made to measure one for DS' room (from JL) it cost around £200 iirc, but all our windows are 230cm wide so everything has had to be made to measure.

I made up for it by making his curtains yslef out of fabric from the fabric warehouse.

I have to say teh JL one is wearing really well, for a start I chose metal cords which are way better than the plastic ones which break, and also the edges are finished which they are not if you buy an off the shelf one and have to cut it down.
