Hi guys

Could you have a look at this car seat (sorry can't do links)

www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/BruHome/BruTravel/BruTravelCarSeats/BruTravelCarSeatsBooster/731234

Do you think it would be ok for DD to use (she'll be 22 months then) on hols?

We have a car out there already (Cyprus) as we are staying at my parents villa, and I didn't want to spend a lot on a new car seat as I bought one already and it didn't fit the car!

Do you see any probs using this one? We are going for two weeks in July, then for a couple of weeks over New Year (so she won't be using it long term).

TIA

CAR seat not CARE seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Link for you, mum2ela!

Looks OK to me - it says from 9 months so should be fine for 22 months size-wise. Is she good in a car seat though or does she try to wriggle out? I think that might be a problem with a seat like this that uses the car's belt and not straps.

Thanks Janh.

Sometimes she will try and get her arms out of her straps but usually she is too preoccupied with looking at the cows / birds etc to care.

Do you think she might be too little and the strap won't properly go under her head IYKWIM? But then, it does say its from 9 months so I s'pose it should be ok. I don't think I would use it with a 9 month old tho.

Thanks Yorkiegirl. How old was your DD when she started using it? Was there any problem with the strap not fitting against chest properly?

we have a similar one (Graco) and it is recommended for age 3 and above. our ds is 2.3yrs and has just started using it, he's pretty big for his age. if he was any smaller the seatbelt would not have sat properly across his chest.
I have seen parent reviews on other sites for similar seats to the one you're looking at (ie, with seat belt adjuster strap, most of the reviews said the strap kept falling of childs shoulder). i suppose it would be ok if there was on adult in the back seat keeping an eye on it.

katzguk · 03/06/2004 11:03

we had this delima too, we needed a second car seat for my parenst car whilst we're away, i decided to go for a graco stella which is a bit more money at £50 but one of the cheapest 5 point harness ones, didn't think my small 19month old DD would stay put with an adult seat.

Mum2Ela · 03/06/2004 11:22

Thanks guys.

Do you think the problem of the seatbelt slipping might be solved with the use of a seat belt adjuster (they sell them on kiddiecare, can't do links)? It holds the lap belt and shoulder belt together IYSWIM?

the seat you're looking at seems to come with an adjuster...it was this adjuster that other parents have said keeps slipping off.
i think as she is only 22mths i would be inclined to go for a 5-point harness seat.
unless big for her age, i wouldn't use the seat that use adult belts until the child is 3yrs (or the size of a 3yr old).

Janh · 03/06/2004 11:35

mum2ela, do Toys R Us sell this seat in store? If you took DD and sat her in it you could tell if the shoulder thing was going to work. (Or don't you have one near you?)

Am assuming you won't be driving long distances in Cyprus? If the shoulder thing is OK and someone sits in the back of the car with her I think this seat would do and it is nice and cheap and also light - are you going to have it delivered there or carry it with you?

I know there are seats like this which have proper harnesses but they're much more expensive, aren't they?

Janh · 03/06/2004 11:39

Just had a trawl through the site and found this

"Britax recommend that non-harnessed seats are more appropriate for use from 10.5kg (approximately 16 months)."

So they would say 22 months was OK for this type of seat!

Mum2Ela · 03/06/2004 11:58

Thanks Janh. I think it would be ok as well. Have rund my local Toys r Us and they don't have it there, but I may buy it on-line and try it, can always send it back.

Gloworm I am inclined not to buy a more expensive 5 point car seat as I bought one which then I found out didn't work in the car (a shogun). Only the more expensive ones seem to fit it (typical!).

BTW, she isn't a little 21 month old. Poeple are generally suprised when I tell them she isn't 2 yet.

sounds like the best idea is to buy one, try it in your car at home and see how it fits her, like u say you can always return it.

do u know if it will fit the car in cyprus? at the end of the day it will probably be ok as long as you keep an eye on her

hope you have a good time!

Mum2Ela · 03/06/2004 12:18

Thanks gloworm. Yeah, it should def fit in the car in cyprus. The other car seats don't fit as their locking device doesn't seem to 'work' on the seat belt type, and they move about like mad!

mum2ela. i have a large 20month old. we have a graco sport booster seat, which is fine for short journeys, but if she falls asleep she isnt as restrained as the 5point harness one. as long as she is tall as well as heavey (and i'm assuming she is if she looks older than she is) and the seat belt doesnt rub on her face/neck it should be fine.

Mum2Ela · 03/06/2004 12:48

Thanks Misdee. I was worried about her falling asleep but I figure its only for 2 weeks and so we will manage I am sure. I am hoping not to spend an awful lot of time in the care, being pregnant and in the baking Cyprus sun, but we will need it to get to a lovely beach we go to, and to/from airport etc. If we have the problem with the belt rubbing her face, I think the sealt belt adjuster thing may work, which kinda holds the top belt lower to the lap belt.

I am sure Dh won't be happy. He wouldn't want me to spend a lot of money on a new seat but he will question this one for sure!

OP posts:
misdee · 03/06/2004 12:52

he cant quibble over £12.50 can he?

Mum2Ela · 03/06/2004 13:07

No but i'll get the third degree about why they sell the 5 point seats if they sell this type too and how obviously (obviously!!) this type doesn't work, then he'll make me justify its existance!!! Nightmare!! And he really doesn't care about things like that, so i'll tell him to worry about his golf and i'll worry about all things to do with shopping!

OP posts:
Branster · 03/06/2004 13:30

i know you can hire car seat abroad when you hire a car from Avis. see if you can hire just a seat whilst you're there? pick it up at the airport. sounds unlikely but worth a try. or borrow one from neighbours over there? if you're not sure it's best not to use it.

misdee · 03/06/2004 17:58

the 5 point harness on these type of car seats can be used till around 40lb. so if your dd is a large as mine she will be almost out of the harness weight range. and will have to use the seat belt anyway.

I've probably missed the answer to this further down....but why cant you take the car seat you use at home with you?

2ticks · 04/06/2004 09:52

We got one of these for ds when he was about 20 months. Got it as a spare for me to have at home as DP has the car with the proper car seat in for work, so it meant that I could stick it in a friend's car for days out or if offered a lift. It's really lightweight and really easy to put in and take out of the car. Thought it would be useful later on too when ds gets older we can separate the parts and use the booster seat on its own.

We bought one of those seatbelt adjuster things that you clip onto the seat belt, and that has worked well in terms of keeping the seat belt away from his face.

We have found it fine. I wouldn't want to do really long journeys with it as it doesn't have the side bits for ds to rest his head against when he's asleep, but for day to day or occasional use we've found it fine.

HTH.

Janh · 04/06/2004 10:16

gloworm, I think the idea is to leave it out there and not carry one backwards and forwards.

Mum2Ela · 08/06/2004 11:40

Thanks everyone.

Gloworm - yes, Janh was right. We want to leave the car seat out there as we will be visiting frequently.

2ticks - thanks for that. Your experience is really useful. Will def get one now to take out there.
