Bumbo - at what age did your child manage to climb out of it?

Bought my Bumbo when ds was 6mo. Should have bought it sooner as he could climb out of it at 7m. The box says suitable up to 14m - would have to be a pretty small and immobile baby. Brilliant product though, while it lasted.

I've only just bought one for dd2 who is 3 months, didnt know they existed for dd1. But dont get rid of it as dd1 who is 20 months loves sitting in it watching tv. She is quite a small 20 month old and I know they say suitable up to 14m. Half the time I cant put my 3 month old in it as the older one is in it, may just be the novelty of something new.

Same question as secur, I don't understand what they're for either?

It helps my daughter to sit up which she is desperate to do. In her rocker chair she does stomach crunches which irritate her after a while. This has a high back and supports her well.

It can go on any flat surface so she watches me in the kitchen and her dad playing his computer games

look

They are made out of rubber so dont move around
At the moment I'm fairly confident she is safe. As she gets bigger tho I think floor will be best.

Secur, we thought ours was the best thing we ever got. Ds could get out of his by about 7 or 8 months, but that generally wasn't the issue - it was a good place to sit, and he still likes sitting in it (17 months) although his attempts to actually get into it himself are hilarious. It is good because he sits up straight and his feet reach the ground!

Never had one or heard of it before, but I can tell DS would have climbed out of it around 8 months (that's when he could climb out of the baby bath).

I thought they seemed rather expensive so are they good value for money?

Mine was £22 from Kiddicare, the cheapest I found them and I think I have had my moneys worth

treacletart · 02/06/2004 16:50

probably 7-8m I think - we bought it at 3m and I'd have liked some longer use but I think its probably still worth it because we used it quite intensively for those first 4m. It was great too to be able to take it with us to mates houses. He enjoys sitting in it now (11m) but generally gets himself off somewhere else after about 5minutes.

cellulitequeen · 02/06/2004 16:52

The month's use I had out of it made it worth the £25 it cost! I used it on the kitchen table to feed him and we used it on a chair in a restaurant etc etc. It was so useful because he could sit and see what was going on but couldn't get out of it (suppose a kind of baby restraining device!). The instructions say not to use on raised surface yet there is a picture of a woman feeding a baby on a table on the box. I am only glad that ds discovered he could get out of it when he was on the floor! Aagh!

Yes, use from 3 months. If have another baby it will be invaluable. In view of other comments made about long-term use I've just put ds in his bumbo in his playpen and so far so good. Little monster hasn't escaped as yet.....

bought it when DS3 was 14 weeks and sold it when he was about 18 or 19 weeks as he climbed out.

IMO an utter waste of money!

Soulfly · 02/06/2004 18:04

what the heck is a bumbo? am i stupid or something??lol

Soulfly · 02/06/2004 18:10

Anyone?

lemonice · 03/06/2004 10:59

Bumbo is a rubber seat for infants which looks a bit like a potty which has a piece between thighs and gently holds them by their body weight in position and is distributed by Grobag.

I was curious about them because I sell grobags and saw them in the trade catalogue but couldn't see their value. I thought they looked like fondue sets, sandwich makers and chicken bricks.

Ds started using his (a hand on) at about 4 months and we've just passed it back and he's 13months. It's been FANTASTIC! He loved to sit in it on the kitchen surface watching me do dishes or looking out the window, in the garden watching Dad clean the car, on tables in restaurants, for meals at other peoples houses, at church creche (saved someone propping him up when he was desperate to sit in order to watch the bigger kids)and so on. We really loved it. particularly great until 6 months, but we continued to use it as a travel "high chair" until recently. He learnt how to get out of it at about 9 months (although he only did it once), so had to be much more careful from then on about watching him in it. One of our favourite baby products!
