Sand and water plastic play things for the garden please
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 13:02
I have been looking at these sort of things for the garden but is 19 months too young for them? MIL reckons she will just eat the sand and throw water everywhere.
When I say garden, I mean small crappy yard but I want something for her to play with when we are outside.
Ta.

No OliveOil, if she's anything like my DD was at that age, she'll love it!! Still keeps her amused for hours at 2.

And what is wrong with throwing water everywhere? tell your MIL not to be such a misery!
I have managed with a washing up bowl full of sand and another for water, as trying to keep v small space uncluttered - and costs down!

I'm hankering after one of the B&Q wooden sandpits for DS: they have a bench surround to sit on and a roof for shade which comes down to keep cats off sand when not in use. About £25.

DD had the ELC sand and water table from last year, aged about 15 months. We never put the full amount of sand or water ina nd keep it at a low level - minimises spills. But she loved it last year, and this year too - still in fab consition so should last for a few years yet.

ToysRus have a good selection of those too. Quite cheap. Getting the sand home if you haven't got a car could be an issue: it's really heavy!

We bought DD one of these play table and she loves it.
Argos will deliver the sand too.
Agree with the others re the mess - she throws sand all over the patio and lawn!!
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 13:57
Thanks everyone, will investigate the one from woolies I think as it is cheap! Have car so ok on the sand front.
I remember having a sandpit when I was a child (my dad dug it out into the garden) and in the summer it was emptied and filled with water, bliss. My mum said she looked out one day from baking to see around 15 kids splashing around.
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 14:02
We are not The Waltons btw, like that last post sounded - 'mum looked out from baking' ffs
Gingerbear · 02/06/2004 14:05
presume the 15 kids were not your brothers and sisters then OO ??
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 14:08
No, neighbours thankfully. But my mum did have a baking day once a week and everyone used to come round to nick cakes and were shooed out.
Gingerbear · 02/06/2004 14:10
there deosn't seem much room in each compartment for playing in, in the one from Woolies OO, maybe one of the cheaper ones from Argos might be better??
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 14:12
There are so many different ones though to choose from everywhere, I think I will have a mooch around and see. Prefer to buy from a shop anyway than online so you can see things properly.

Agree with other comments here - sand and water has great play value from very young age. I bought ds1 a toy dustpan and brush with the sandpit, and he had a go at sweeping up the mess after playing. But we weren't fussed about the sand everywhere. This is the first year they've hardly played in it, but they are 5 and 6 now, and we now live 5 mins from the beach, so I guess a bit of sand has lost it's novelty value!
oliveoil · 02/06/2004 14:25
You live 5 mins from the beach??? grrrrrrr, I hate you
Soulfly · 02/06/2004 14:34
We have a sand and water table, you can get them from early learning centre

oooooh, I have just been looking at that one, and a butterfly sandpit type thing. I want one of the bouncy castle things as well but it would fill up my garden!
