double buggy recommendations

Am looking for a double buggy and needing a point in the right direction! Will be for an 18mth old and a 6mth old (and hopefully last them for a while)

Would prefer one in which they are sitting side by side so they can interact and needs to be fairly sturdy. Will be used for a decent amount every day (quite likely a 3 mile round trip for the school run)Oh, as live in Scotland I need one that is weather (read rain) resistant and will take a bit of punishment.

What do you lot suggest?

My daughter will be 14mths when baby no2 arrives. The travel system we bought (and spent a fortune on) will now be redundant!!! Can anyone pass on their experiences as to which double buggy is the best for a newborn?? Most grateful

I thought I wanted a side by side until I borrowed one and it was SO restricting as regards getting around shops, on public transport, down pavements etc...that I soon bought a Phil and Teds and haven't looked back - extremely manouevreable, slimline and very comfortable for the kids. It seems to be the number one choice in double buggy in my area, judging by the number I see in the high street. Very hard wearing & good raincover. I've been recommending it to everyone and still get a lot of use out of mine as cover a lot of ground on a daily basis with my ds (3 1/2) and dd (22 mth). The ONLY downside I found was that the baby doesn't face you...

If you're not a towny like me so aren't bothered by the width of the pram, the Mountain (?) buggy (chunky, all terrain type thing) is v.g., I hear.

emmaljunga is the best if you do a lot of walking and the big wheels means that it easily goes off road too. And it lays completely flat for a newborn.

thank you for all the replies! think am gonna go and do bit of test driving. EmmalJunga looks good so far and will def have look at Phil and Teds.

IMO you need a mountain buggy double... you wont be disappointed

(as long as you dont have lots of narrow doors to get through)

In my exeperiance mountian buggies are one of the few pushcahirs currently on the market that are still going strong 3 children down the line!

NannyL · 23/01/2007 18:50

BTW i use a phil and teds and IMO its the best double ever... on the grounds it fits through doors... and you can push it (easily), and it fits in a small boot

dont know of any other double that fits all of the above 3 criteria!

i have a 2.5year old and a baby. i recently bought a phil and ted e3 as i do a lot of walking and the distances are often too far for my toddler to walk the whole way. the buggy is great and very easy to manoeuvre. however i am having some problems with the doubles seat. i find that it is not supporting the weight of my toddler, the base of it has begun to sag and the straps are starting to come away from the seat. my little boy is less than15kg (the max weight recommended for the doubles seat) so i am not sure why this has happened. has anyone else experienced anything like this? i can see me having to replace the doubles seat when my baby needs to move out of the newborn position, which considering the amount of money i have spent on the buggy i am not too pleased about...

another vote for a mountain buggy - will be ideal for that school trip - mine has been. Find rain cover really good, and will good fleece sleeping bag things keeps them warm. Mine if 5 years old and has done my 3, and a friends 2 and is still going strong.

NannyL · 26/01/2007 19:51

claire 32... my 3 year old is 20kg and regualrly sits in the bottom seat (the seat that goes on the top when new born is in the newborn carrycot bit underneath) and we dont have this problem at all

(we know the limit is 15kg but he still goes in it)

ours is 18 months and pretty much as good as new

its 'well used' on a day to day basis as well

hotmama · 26/01/2007 19:55

Another vote for a Phil and Ted. My dd's are 11 months and 27 months - so a buggy board wasn't an option.

I also have an expensive buggy which I bought for dd1. Hasn't been used for over a year!

claire32 · 27/01/2007 22:29

NannyL, thank-you for the information on your phil and ted doubles seat. i will give it another few weeks and if it gets any worse will get in touch with the company i bought it from - maybe a have a fautly seat!

NannyL · 27/01/2007 23:04

thats ok claire

good luck

probably worth mentioning that we dont staro 20kg 3 year old in when he sits in the bottom either, so the straos havent been used for a while...

but even so, they seem very attached (i had a good look when BBsitting last night) and cant see that they would come away easily if at all

NannyL · 27/01/2007 23:06

strap

also he had his 4th birthday this week and now he is 4 he wont be going in the buggy at all... i dont push 4 year olds who are physically able to walk
