Fabric slings vs baby bjorn - which is best?

I used a borrowed baby bjorn for DS and it was okay.
I'm thinking of buying one for new baby but intrigued by all these other sling things

Are they just bits of cloth?
If they are good how come nowhere on the high st seems to sell them?

ProfYaffle, DD is 11 months old abd about, er, 22lbs or so. I wouldn't say I'd like to carry her in it all day but her weight has never been a problem.

Thanks - that's good to know. Must go and dust off the credit card ...

As an aside, I have a referral number for Brightsparksslings and it's 268. I have no idea what this does or what it gets me mind you!! I think you type it in where you get asked "where dod you hear of us..." if you order from them.

Just browsing and thought I'd add to this as I am wondering what to use now DD bigger (7 months, 16lbs). I use a baby bjorn - she hated it when she had to face me in it, but as soon as I could carry her facing outwards she was addicted and absolutely loved it. However, as others have said, I started to get back ache as she got bigger and now can't use it for more than a quick trip round the supermarket - and even that is getting hard work. Should I go for something like a fabric sling, or should we be looking at a hip seat or even a back carrier - decisions, decisions.....Want something that will see us through the next year so it is good value.

Mummykt, an ergo carrier or a mei-tei is excellent value for money for an older baby. they are idiot proof and fully adjustable for all sizes and shapes of grownups. you can put a baby to a 3 to 4 stone toddler in one without doing your back in.

again, very high resale value

search threads here on MN for 'ergo carrier' and go to mei-tei on google. Patapum is a brand name of mei-tei that are very popular and consistently gets good reviews on theBabyWearer.com

I bought my last sling from

www.rumplebums.co.uk

they also do a sling hire service if you want to try before you buy.

Katierocket, sorry only just seen your question. I'm actually in the States, so ordered mine from the US site. I don't know how much shipping to the UK is. If you can get hold of one, they are fab!

(and remember, the price is in $, so works out quite reasonable, I think )

Oooh, hiring sounds like a good idea! Think I might do that. Thank you for the suggestion
