Advice wanted on waterproof mattress covers

We're in the process of buying a bed for our dd to transfer out of her cot and I'm not sure what kind of waterproof mattress covers to get?

It's all costing rather a lot, with new bed, 2 duvet covers, 2 sets of sheets, bedrail etc. I've seen sets of waterproof mattress covers plus waterproof pillow and duvet covers for just £9.99 in Argos, but they're PVC and I wondered whether that would actually be just too horrible to sleep on (I know it goes under the sheet)? They're also hand wash only (although my washing machine does have a handwash cycle).

What do other people use? Also is it worth getting pillow and duvet protectors as well?

Thanks for any advice.

We only needed a waterproof sheet - John Lewis have comfy terry backed ones but I think they're around £20. Machine washable at 60 degrees which is a real plus though!
Once dd was into potty training I bought a second one so I could change all the sheets in the middle of the night. If you get a comfy w/proof sheet it isn't wasted as you can use it as a mattress protector.
I have got hypoallergenic covers rather than waterproof for the pillow and duvet cover. It does all seem to cost a fortune when you add it up!!!
You would be fine with a cheap mattress for a young child IMO though.

we have the Mothercare one (dont remember the rpice, sorry) but it isn't a full sheet, only about half the size of the bed and designed to go under the normal sheet.
It doesn't move, is washable at 60, dries very quickly and DS has not even noticed that it's there.

la redoute make flannelette/PVC sheets, full bed size with strips of elastic at the corners, can wash at 95 and tumble dry too, brilliant.

Can't give you a link to the page, la redoute don't work like that, but the homepage is here and then you want interieurs and then fitted sheets - you have to wade through all the pages until you get to flat mattress covers (they're not all waterproof).

sobernow has a point about the really plastic ones though - you can just wipe dry and change the bedsheet, and many kids don't notice the plasticness.

Sorry, forgot to say they're about £13 for a single bed size.

Thanks all for the tips. I've looked on La Redoute and found a fleecy Amicor mattress cover for £15 which looks quite nice, although it's out of stock (and a towelling one for £19). Will wait and see if it comes in stock as I think now that I prefer the idea of a soft cover.

Still not sure though, Sobernow - do you use the Argos duvet and pillow protectors as well?

I hadn't thought about the wipe clean aspect - just like our current cot mattress I suppose, which just gets wiped and not washed.
