Are Baby Carriers worth the money?

My DH and I have had the idea that it would be nice to go to the Lake District for a few days with DD (she's 14 months), which would include a fair amount of walking. We like the idea of one of those backpack baby carriers to put DD in as a pushchair would be pretty cumbersome and she loves being carried by daddy! But they are pretty expensive and I don't know if we'd get that much use out of it, anyone got one, and what do you reckon?

Really janitor, I never knew you could hire them. That sounds just the thing, yes we were thinking about Windermere of Kendal although we haven't booked anything yet.

I have recently bought an Ergo which is excellent. I had a framed one once and it was a nightmare - overly cumbersome.

springer72 · 16/01/2007 16:19

I'm the opposite. I didn't get on with the Ergo one at all. I've got a Vaude one now which is fine for up to an hour at a time, as long as the straps are in the just right place (agony if they're not) but dh manages to use it for longer. I use it twice a day most days to walk the dogs.

Can you borrow one from a friend to try out before you go?

I'm a fan of the ergo, it's great once you've gotton used to getting it on your back properly. I still use it every day for my 16 month old dd.

Fillyjonk · 16/01/2007 19:03

ergo great

i use mine every day with my 18 mo

mamama · 16/01/2007 19:08

I'm another ergo fan - 16 month old DS goes in it most days

Well worth the money

belgo · 16/01/2007 19:14

Have any of you got the bag attachment for the ergo? Is it worth buying?

Don't have the bag for the ergo, I just use the little pouch and/ or my handbag/ changing bag etc over my shoulder.

We have a Kelty one
Not used it much but will do in Cornwall this summer

belgo · 16/01/2007 20:05

kandi - can you borrow one from someone? I've borrowed baby carriers/slings, and I lend mine out to people - they can be a very expensive mistake if you buy one and don't get on with it.

We had one similar to this one and used it more for dd than ds. Took ds away to Austria at that age and we used it every day, would never have been able to walk far seriously without it. Even in the Alps, by which time we also had an all terrain buggy, we used it a lot for dd , who is very petite , until she would walk the full distance we and ds would (from about 3 -3 1/2). If you are likely to use it for weekend jaunts and possibly other kids it is worth the investment.
