Kids' sunglasses - where can I get decent ones?

Where can I get decent sunglasses for my dds aged 8 and 6. There seems to be only "fashion" ones which offer no protection or ones which my dds complain are too tight and refuse to wear.

Anyone found the perfect pair?

Megali - I read your thread as I'd like to know the answer, too. I also need to buy some good sun protection hats for my kids. Any advice, anyone? Mine are aged 10 and 9 btw.

Janh · 27/05/2004 14:35

Matalan sell Foster Grants at a somewhat reduced price and I'm pretty sure some of those are kids' ones. (But if you're thinking of going ring up first cos I might have imagined it!)

tiamaria · 27/05/2004 21:04

Janh - Thanks for that. I'll be near a Matalan store next week, I'll check it out then!

Megali · 27/05/2004 23:01

Tiamaria - can you let me know when you go. Matalan is quite far away from us - so if you confirm they have them, I'll make a special trip.

Thanks

Bloss - Thanks very much for that. I've taken a quick look and will look again with dh.

Megali - I'll print off this thread now and put it in my handbag to remind me! I'll let you know when I'm next online in about a week from now.

tiamaria · 28/05/2004 12:39

Crystaltips - Thanks for that. I might be lucky enough to go to M&S next week. It's great to have all these options!

Thanks everyone.

Crystaltips - I went to M&S this morning and got 2 pairs - will see how they go down with my dds after school today.

Tiamaria - may not need Matalan now but thanks for offering

Dinosaur - we don't have a JL near us.

Bloss - Australian website is great but I've just bought the M&S ones.

Thanks for all your help

Thanks for the link, bloss! Was v amused by the "Everyday Rubs-on-easily 2.5ltr" - TWO AND A HALF LITRES??????
Interesting that all the adult sunglasses are polarised. They are definitely the best for cutting out glare but went out of favour here years ago because of the patterns they made in windscreens - I have just bought a pair to use in the car but haven't got around to putting them into the car yet so don't know if they've got round that problem?

megali, glad you've found some, hope your DDs like them!

tiamaria · 28/05/2004 20:55

Megali - Thanks for your last post. I think I saw Foster Grants sunglasses for kids in the Co-op today, but I was in a rush so I didn't look closely. I might go in tomorrow and check it out. The ones I looked at were £6.99. I hope your dds liked the M&S ones!

Gem13 · 28/05/2004 21:03

Might be a bit controversial here but I'm sure I read once that children shouldn't wear sunglasses as they should squint in bright sunlight to protect their eyes. Harmful UV rays still hit their eyes with sunglasses on because their eyes are open.

I'm happy to be told this nonsense. Just something that stuck with me.

Sorry for the rubbish wording - rushing to watch Friends!

I love my polarised sunglasses (Raybans) especially when I'm driving.

Do Gap over there sell kid's sunglasses? They do here, and they're pretty cheap and block 100% of UV rays.

Megali · 31/05/2004 22:43

Yes, my dds did love their M&S sunglasses. We were away for the weekend - and I could hardly get them to take them off!

Megali - I'm glad the M&S ones were a success. I've bought a pair for dd in Tesco but was unsure of the meaning of the classification they carried. I'm waiting for the Tesco head office to come back to me with the meaning as customer services had no idea, either. Glad you're fixed up.

Hulababy · 09/06/2004 10:47

A research study not too long ago (year or so I think) found that generally the children's sunglasses offering most protection were the cheaper glases you can buy in pharmacists and chemist. i was suprised but there you are!

SoupDragon · 09/06/2004 10:57

JanH, my polorised sunglasses still make patterns on windscreens. They turn some blue too which I assume are those with heat reflective coatings on. I also have trouble reading the LCD display on my phone with them on! I don't often actually drive with them though as I have prescription sunglasses for that.
