Replacement kitchen doors

We are thinking of replacing our kitchen doors but retaining the carcass. Ideally we want a company who will fit them as well as DP not too talented at DIY.

Any tales of great service or indeed horror stories of companies to steer away from.

Thanks.

B&Q warehouse just sell the doors to ALL their ranges and they are really good. There is a company in Brum who does MDF door that are ready to paint...James somebody, always in the back of house mags

We decided to go down this route rather than ripping out the whole kitchen as we liked the basic layout/design, it just looked a bit tired and dated.

After getting quotes, we were surprised to find it still cost quite a lot though, forgotten the names of the companies but found them on-line - it was well in excess of £1,000 to do approx 12 doors, plinths and cupboard fronts. So we've now found a local carpenter who is going to make them all for £500 (and fit it). We found him in our local yellow pages and asked to see evidence of previous work so we could judge the quality of it.

Please please please please please stay well clear or B&Q - we had our kitchen AND bathroom done by them just before christmas - I have never come across such incompetance in all my life - save yourself the stress and go somewhere else - ANYWHERE else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howdens are a brilliant company but unfortunalty there are trade only - if you can find a carpenter or someone with an account they are the best place to go.

well my husband just put them on after we bought them, not b-and-que

sandyballs · 25/05/2004 15:31

Our friend has an account at Howdens and we wanted a quote to replace the whole kitchen. It took me 8 telephone calls to finally get someone round to our house to measure up. That was at Easter and we still haven't received the quote.

I've heard B&Q are OK if it's just doors but not for the whole kitchen replacement. The doors were no good for us though as they are only standard size.

Howdens belong to Hygena/MFI. Not sure if this is significant or not!

I know a good builder who likes Howdens, doesn't like B&Q (tho i think they have some nice doors that I'd like)and doesn't like IKEA kitchens but I thought IKEA were popular with architects. You don't have to be in the trade to buy from Howdens i opened an account there, but haven't made up my mind Prefer the B&Q oak kitchen. Can't afford to do it yet We haven't a kitchen just a sink, fridge and cooker and bare concrete floor, no light fittings, no decoration.....

mrsjingles · 27/05/2004 16:56

We've just extended our kitchen and at the same time replaced the existing kitchen doors to match the new extended ones. We got the doors from b&q and they were brilliant, the best bit though was that the doors were half price, so we got 10 doors for about £130 including handles and everyone thinks they look loads more expensive.

My husband replaced our doors, is your DP sure he couldnt do it, it really is just a case of unscrewing the hinges and screwing the new door on. For the handles, he could make a template where the holes need to go and you can't really go wrong.

It just seems such a shame to pay someone a few hundred pounds to fit the doors, when you can get them at such a reasonable price - I think I'd rather try myself first than hand over the sort of money tradepeople charge.

Good luck in your quest!!
